•  Harassment. Performers are trained to interact with and startle guests, but they will not touch or hassle you. •  Satanic imagery. •  Excessive guts and gore. •  An age limit. We do not recommend the experience for young children, but we instead advise parents to use their own discretion.  There is loud noises, spooky noises & music, actors jumping out and wearing masks and makeup. If your child is easily scared by these kinds of things, think better of it.

I actually am kinda picky about "scare houses" and I really enjoyed both of them! I was impressed with the variety and I honestly got scared a bunch of times!!

Great fun! I took a group of 12 year olds and we loved it! Can't wait to go again! They add new things to it so it's not the same each week!

Stories of a murderous nun and a grumpy plural wife star in a lineup of haunted houses that are real around the state. KSL Homes tells you where to find them.

7 real haunted houses in Utah

Discussed in this article, welcome to spook lake city and beyond, home of the ghosts of people passed., the nunnery | 89 pine glen cove, logan, benson grist mill | 325 ut-138, stansbury park, lion house | 63 e south temple, salt lake city, brigham young farmhouse | 2601 e sunnyside avenue, salt lake city, devereaux mansion | 340 w south temple, salt lake city, mccune mansion | 200 n main street, salt lake city, moore’s old pine inn | 110 s main, marysvale, happy haunting.

Tycoons, nuns, too many brides, scads of children and men in black. Sounds like the cast of a B-movie. This troupe of characters, though, has a unique story to tell. Their tale is about people who died, and then lived. You can see it all played out in the real haunted houses of Utah.

As if an old cabin in the woods weren’t creepy enough — thank you, slasher films — the grisly tale of pregnant nuns and crying babies certifies it as haunting. While it’s known around Logan storytellers as The Nunnery, the 2.5-acre property was actually once called St. Ann’s Retreat. It’s Anne with an E in the tale, though, because ghosts can spell however they want.

The original house was built around 1915 by well-known local banker Hezekiah Eastman Hatch, and his son later added more cabins and structures to the property. One of the wealthiest men in America at the time, L. Boyd Hatch spent summers with his wife and kids at his mini resort, inviting politicians, actors and directors to join them. Someone wanted to be popular.

In the 1950s, The Hatch family turned the camp over to the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake to use as a youth camp — and a nefarious legend was born. Reportedly, pregnant nuns were sent to the retreat to keep their condition secret. The story varies from there. One says all the newborns were drowned in the swimming pool, another says a pregnant nun ran away to raise her child.

One of the more fantastical fables says Mother Superior hunted down the runaway nun and killed her, burying her body on the property — and leaving her ghost to roam the woods nearby. People say at night, you can hear babies crying, and you may see a nun walking with a dog.

Perhaps it was the rumors of mayhem that emboldened three security guards charged with terrorizing some local teens. Throughout the night of Oct. 10, 1997, the men tied up 38 trespassing teens and young adults — by the neck — and held them at gunpoint in the retreat’s empty pool. The kids said they were told their bindings were connected to explosives. Several of the youth were turned over to police, and the rest were let go the next morning. The guards were later arrested; their three-day trial ended in a plea deal.

Ghost hunters say running water creates electrical energy for spirits to feed on. The Benson Grist Mill — built in 1854 to process corn and wheat — has a practical spirit generator with its working water wheel.

The mill was shut down in the 1940s, which is probably when the poltergeists started squatting there. They haven’t left, despite the mill and its surrounding buildings being restored by volunteers in the 1980s. Today, three ghosts reportedly haunt the mill, including a 6-year-old girl.

Little Alice Irene Solomon drowned in the reservoir behind the mill and purportedly continues to wander the grounds. She occasionally joins other students in the nearby school classroom to throw chalk dust at visitors. No one has seen those kids, but they have heard their laughter.

A shadowy black figure has also been seen out on the bridge near the drowning site, giving rise to the story that Alice was actually killed by the man. (Para)normally, though, he lives on the second floor. He is angry, people say, and has been known to touch visitors.

The third is a woman dressed in white — of course, since flour gets everywhere. She never leaves the third floor, she just stands in a doorway and calls out to visitors. Maybe she’s just trying to hitch a ride out of there, because people have also seen her on the balcony, waving to passing cars.

Another early Utah structure, the Lion House was the home of territorial president Brigham Young. The building is now an event venue, but that hasn’t hampered the ghosts chilling there.

Utahns are known for being friendly, and the specters are no different. Some people claim they have heard a man clearing his throat, but that’s probably only when someone is encroaching on his personal space. And if any spirit bothers you, you can firmly ask them to leave you alone — and they will. Other ghostly shadows simply flit between rooms.

They’re a fun bunch, too. On Brigham’s birthday each year, the china cabinet repeatedly unlocks and relocks itself, people claim. It’s said the ghosts’ are trying to throw a party for him.

Skeptical? Lion House employees actually captured a strangely human looking ghost — dressed in a white sheet — in a video posted on its Facebook page a few years ago, which is scarily silly. So there’s that.

Several ghosts from the Young family have been seen around Brigham’s farmhouse at This is the Place Heritage Park . The home was a favorite spot of the leader, though he never lived in it, so it makes sense he likes to revisit on occasion. Brigham’s apparition has been seen in the house several times, walking around with the cane he used later in life and smiling at guests.

His 19th wife, Ann Eliza Webb, actually lived in the farmhouse for a time — before rejecting the practice of polygamy. Apparently she’s still mad about it, because she’s been seen there several times, witnessed by tour guides and visitors.

Young’s second wife, Lucy Ann Decker, appears to have no hard feelings. She continues to hang out in the kitchen. Visitors report not only seeing her happily tending the stove, but also smelling the heavenly food she’s preparing.

Brigham had 56 children, so you’d expect some of them to still be hanging around. A watchman reported hearing laughing and running around in the upstairs ballroom when he was locking up one night, but upon investigation found only an empty room. Obviously it was an anomaly — kids quickly cleaning up and going to bed when they’re told?

In the 1950s, the Wilcox family restored the home. At an open house, Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox had a long conversation with a man dressed in old-timey clothes, and even took a picture with him. But when they received the print, there was an empty space where he had stood. Brigham’s son, John A. Young, is the suspected mystery guest. The farmhouse is now — appropriately, some might say — a wedding and party venue.

Youthful specters seem to be a common thread in Utah haunted houses that are real. A 5-year-old girl dressed in 1850s clothing is known to drift through rooms in the Devereaux Mansion in downtown Salt Lake City.

Aside from being a ghost, she’s a typical kid. Kitchen staff say she moves objects around to perplex them and sometimes turns the lights on and off while they’re working. There seems to be no ill-intent, though. People claim they have seen her through an upstairs window, waving to them or singing to herself. She’s even been known to photobomb on occasion. See what we mean? Typical.

A second ghost — perhaps a former head housekeeper — is not so comfortable with intruders. She appears when she feels the home needs protecting, it seems. Witnesses said she becomes quite aggressive when she confronts visitors and has even been known to throw things. Can’t really blame her. Watching people spill crumbs on your freshly washed floor for 150 years will do that to a person.

The mansion was built by pioneer William C. Staines in 1865, although it belonged to several different families and businesses over the years. From 1904-1912, it was used as a retreat to cure addictions — opium, cocaine, tobacco … and nervousness. The ghost sightings probably didn’t help with that last one.

The Devereaux Mansion was later abandoned and stood vacant for decades, then was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1979. It has since been restored and now serves as meeting space for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the ghosts remain. Probably still trying to get that smoke smell out of their clothes.

Christmas in a McMansion may not be all it’s cracked up to be. A man not so gaily donning a black cape is often seen in the McCune Mansion around the holidays, most often peering out from one of the many mirrors.

Another child, this time a 10-year-old girl, prefers to show up at the wedding events hosted there. She’s been seen many times dancing and giggling. You’ll recognize her from a picture hanging in the home.

Even if you’re not (un)lucky enough to see the ghosts, you may feel cold spots indicating their presence. Or maybe drafts are inevitable in a house built in 1901.

The 21-room McCune Mansion was built for railroad tycoon Alfred McCune at a truly frightening cost of $1 million. It is considered among the grandest American homes built in the early 20th century. When McCune and his family moved to California, they gave the house to the Latter-day Saint Church, which then used it as a music school. That might explain why visitors sometimes hear an organ playing when no one is around.

The oldest running hotel in Utah is a bed and breakfast in the tiny town of Marysvale, near the Paiute ATV trail . It’s such a pleasant, laid back place that some guests have refused to check out. Visitors report seeing spirits sitting on the front porch of the original portion of the inn, and sometimes even in the rooms. A medium confirmed there is at least one woman and two children spirits living there permanently, but they always defer to the paying customers. Utah ghosts really are well-mannered.

We can’t promise you’ll see a ghost when you visit real haunted houses in Utah. But isn’t looking for one better than actually finding one anyway? Beware: Walking around spooky places can be fun, but the ones included here are all private property — no trespassing, please.

Legendary Utah nunnery, rumored to be haunted, is for sale

by Larry D. Curtis

{ }St. Ann's{ }Retreat in Logan Canyon is for sale. The property, long rumored to be haunted is a historical landmark in the Cache National Forest. (Photo: Courtesy Eric Michael Jones)

(KUTV) — One of Utah's most storied properties, long rumored to be haunted, is for sale.

Next to the Logan River and Highway 89 that connects Logan, Utah, with Beaver Mountain Ski Area and Bear Lake, sits what was known as St. Ann's Nunnery or more officially, St. Ann's Retreat. Locals and Utah State University students know it as a hot spot for ghost stories with legends of pregnant nuns and death.

Now, 89 Pine Glen Cove is on the Utah Real Estate market for $700,000 .

Not only is the property the stuff of legends, it has a fascinating actual history too, including when three men held a group of teens at gunpoint in the bottom of a swimming pool and later pleaded guilty to their crimes. As interesting as that confirmed incident is, it's the folklore of pregnant nuns and hauntings of ghost babies that really seems to capture the imagination of the community.

It has even served as fodder for ghost hunting TV shows.

"Ladies and gentleman, I am in Logan Canyon, Utah, and I am in camp hell" says one introduction on the Travel Channel. "What we are investigating is a dark, demonic entity that a psychic we had here earlier was possessed by."

The video's color saturation and contrast are turned way up and frightening ambiant sounds play along with declarations that the property is "just horrific. "

The promotional material from the real estate company isn't nearly so grim.

"Amazing investment opportunity in Logan canyon! Largest retreat in the Cache national forest and the only one with a swimming pool. This property has a long rich history that was started by the Hatch family as a retreat in 1910," it says. The past also includes the Odlum family who collectively built the property in the 1920s.

It's the actual history, not the haunted history, that will be most important for potential buyers. The sales copy says:

Placed on the national register of historic places in 2006. Includes 21 buildings and structures, 2 main lodges, 6 smaller cabins, play house, pool house and generator house, along with a fireplace, bridge and swimming pool. All showings need to be arranged with the listing agent and listing agent has to be present.

Showings need to be arranged with co-agents Isabel Jones and Eric Michael Jones .

"A permit will need to be issued to the new buyers. Permit is issued upon approval of use from the forest service. Use of the property has to be available to the public, no private use allowed. Since the property is on the historic registry, the new owner will need to get approval of any changes to the property," the listing says.

The property has long be the subject of rumors and long been subjected to trespassers. It's online exhibit history at the USU library says:

In 1992, Mark Epstein, together with some other investors, bought the property with plans of turning it into vacation homes. What these investors may not have anticipated was the generally accepted folk tradition of legend-tripping to the site, generated by the long standing cultural gap between local Mormons and Catholics, and how fear, belief, prejudice would interfere with their hopes of vacationing peacefully in the beautiful mountains of Logan Canyon.

According to the exhibit the legends of the retreat — is spelled St. Anne's with an e in folklore, but without the extra vowel in the annuls of the Catholic Church that acquired the property in the 1950s. According to the exhibit:

The Fife Folklore Archives at Utah State University houses about fifty legend versions of St. Anne’s Retreat, and an additional twenty-six of the related Hecate legend version, collected by students through the years.

In some versions of the legend a pregnant nun left the retreat and raised her child while in others it died and in others the escaped nun drowned in the pool. None of those legends are verified and are mostly likely the result of a clash between religious cultures, perhaps in partnership with the idea that everybody loves a ghost story.

What undisputedly did happen, and is rather scary: in 1997 three security guards had eight teens taken from the property by police but then rounded up 30 additional teens and held them with shotguns in the bottom of the property's pool.

Chronicled in the USU library archives, a three-day trail of the security guards was suddenly stopped when the trio pleaded guilty to lesser charges for terrorizing the teens in a trial that polarized the Logan community. The men were accused of threatening the teens, placing them in restraints, fondling one of the girls and tying all of them together by their necks with cords they said were hooked to explosives.

According to the press, some locals thought the kids, not the security guards, were wrong for trespassing.

One fact is undisputed, the 2.5 acres of canyon real estate is available to the right buyer. It lists 12 bedrooms and nine bathrooms with well water, connected power and a septic tank with mountain views and mature trees. For more information about the listing contact Isabel Jones or Eric Michael Jones at utahrealestate.com/1726929 .

A report on the property is included in book, " Putting the Supernatural in Its Place: Folklore, the Hypermodern, and the Ethereal ," available on Amazon.

THE SPOOKIEST HAUNTED HOUSE IN SALT LAKE CITY!

Strangling brothers haunted circus.

American Fork, Utah

Ever wanted to be part of a haunted traveling circus? Step right up!

Strangling Brothers Haunted Circus is like no other haunted house you’ve ever experienced. Their cast of entertainers of the night has only grown since its inception, possibly by nefarious means…

In the 1900s, a mysterious traveling circus roamed the countryside of Utah. It crawled from town to town, greedily claiming more than its fair share of screams and dreams.

The ruthless and cunning Ringmaster led the circus, and he sought new recruits in every audience. He looked for the lonely, strange, and forgotten. Whenever the circus left town, children were rumored to vanish like a wisp of smoke in the night. But soon, they were all forgotten.

The Ringmaster’s cruelty had bred malice throughout the shadows of his own circus. His show was branded with torture, terror, and murder, and his performers despised him. Two deviant misfits convinced the others to band together against him, and they murdered the Ringmaster and took control of the circus. The murderers earned a new moniker: the Strangling Brothers .

Dressed as clowns, they were even more evil than the man they killed, and the circus was darker than ever before. More and more misfits started disappearing from the towns they traveled to, and they have a thirst for blood…

Walk through this haunted house in Salt Lake City with endless scenes of demonic clowns and freakish chaos. As you try to exit, you may just hear the voice of the demonic Strangling Brothers say, “You are now part of the show!”

THIS UTAH HAUNTED HOUSE AND THEME PARK WILL LEAVE YOU RUNNING FOR THE EXIT!

FRIGHTMARES AT LAGOON PARK

Farmington, Utah

Get ready to scream at the theme park…and not just because of the rollercoasters!

Frightmares is an event that’s held yearly at Lagoon Park , one of the largest theme parks in Utah. During the normal season, they have a wide variety of rollercoasters , including Cannibal, Puff the Little Fire Dragon, Bat, Colossus: The Fire Dragon, and Musik Express. Other rides include a ferris wheel, sky ride, bumper cars, and catapult.

During the spookiest season of the year, you can experience the park in a completely different way, one that will send shivers down your spine. The park puts on a Seance show, a fully immersive haunted experience that blends the chilling live performance, intense physical effects, and unexpected audience participation. You’ll be thrust into the action as the ghost story comes to life!

There are attractions for adults and children alike. Those who want to be scared can check out Nightmare Midway. As you watch your nightmares come alive, you might start to wonder if you will survive. You’ll encounter illusions that will leave you screaming! Frightening Frisco is a ghost town, but something sinister has taken hold of it. Watch out for outlaws and other creepy scenes! The scariest area of this haunted house near me is the Nighwalk. Think twice before you enter, as the devil is the main presenter! You’ll be tormented by vampires and demons, and many guests can’t handle the horror…

Frightmare at Lagoon Park also has lots of events that are catered to kids. The whole family can visit Treat Street, Spook-A-Boo Walk-Thru, Scary & Crows Straw Maze, and Streetmosphere. Anyone can have tons of Halloween fun at this Utah haunted house and theme park!

MUCH CREEPIER THAN ANY HAUNTED HOUSE NEAR ME!

HAUNTED KAY’S CROSS

Kaysville, Utah

Kay’s Cross was a large stone cross that stood the abandoned woods of Kaysville, Utah. It was over 20 feet tall and made of stone and mortar. The cross was reduced to rubble in 1992, but its legend still lives on… Since it was built, it has been a site filled with gossip, cult activity, and possibly demons.

There are rumors that ghosts and demons haunt this site. Shows like Ghost Adventures have visited the cross and captured paranormal activity. It’s said that a strange, spectral woman haunts Kay’s Cross, chasing away visitors. Satanic covens allegedly used to do rituals at the site, including a special sacrifice on Halloween night.

The best known legend of Kay’s Cross tells the story of a polygamist. He owned the land the cross is on. The man allegedly snapped and killed seven of his wives, burying six of them around the cross. He then buried one standing upright in the base of the cross, and he encased her heart in the center of the cross. He then hung himself from the cross as penance for his crimes.

This legend is very likely a work of fiction, but the story surrounding the cross is still incredibly strange. In 1992, a man came forward who said the cross was built in honor of Krishna Venta. The large “K” at the top of the cross stood for “Kingdom,” a word that played a prominent role in Venta’s speeches.

Krisha Venta is an interesting character. He was a cult leader of more than 100 people for several years, but his reign came to a shocking end. In 1958, two of his former members confronted him and tried to get him to confess to his crimes on a tape recorder. When this didn’t work, they blew themselves up and anyone close enough by detonating a bag full of dynamite. Krishna Venta was killed, along with seven other cult members.

Surprisingly, the history of Krisha Venta actually gives the cross a connection to Charles Manson . Despite Venta’s death, his organization, the Fountain of the World, survived. In 1968, Charles Manson and a few of his followers went to stay at their monastery on and off for a few months, learning Krisha Venta’s teachings. Eventually the members of Manson’s cult began to scare the residents of the monastery, and they were forced to leave. Despite this, Manson adopted many of Venta’s prophecies and twisted them to create Helter Skelter .

Now, you can take a guided tour of the site. You can make the creepy trek through the forest, where you’ll definitely feel like there are hundreds of eyes watching you from behind the trees. You’ll get the opportunity to see the remains the historic Kay’s Cross at night and decide for yourself whether any of the energy lingers here…

Very startling and jumpy! Decorations and themes are great, Everything you'd want in a haunted house!

Photo of Carrie And Bryce M.

What a fun night! Great jump scares and so many different areas. You never know what you are walking into next. The Dark areas are pitch black and you can't tell left from right, which is awesome. So much thought put into this place. There is even a section that takes you under ground slightly. So freaking cool. Even better to go and watch your kids get scared!

Photo of Echoflame41 ..

Worst haunted house ever. Long boring sections. Tripping hazards everywhere, surprised they haven't been sued honestly. Cast was very sparse and barely made any effort to scare our group. We seriously ran into an actor maybe once every 5 minutes. It was already a one star experience but the moment that totally cements my rating was when one of the cast members told us that the stick he was holding was for "beating in the heads of -insert black racial slur here-". It just came out of nowhere and was totally inappropriate and appalling. When we got out of the haunt we asked to talk to a manager. The most truly horrifying part of the whole experience was the way that this manager treated us when we brought it to his attention that his employee was saying horribly inappropriate and disturbing racial language. He was dismissive, rude, unconcerned and extremely unprofessional. He refused to offer an apology or a refund and said that he "can't control what the cast says because they're just 15 year old kids". We gave him a detailed description of the actor who used the slur and he just kept saying that he didn't know who that could be and that he "doesn't know the cast, so what did we want him to do". When we told him that we were disgusted and would be leaving negative reviews he swore at us and called us names. In conclusion, if you're looking to spend 25 bucks each to have a boring 30 minute walk where you might twist an ankle or get hate-crimed then Haunted Hollow is the place for you.

Photo of Christy B.

This haunted house takes some time to get through and has some great scenes and characters. A nice variety of scares and so spooky. I would coach one actor at the beginning that backing someone up against a wall is one thing, but putting your hands on the wall on either side of the wall around them is almost borderline too far, so IF you do it, you need to pull away immediately. Staying there for even 3-5 seconds is a bit too much. However, I'm sure the intent was to give all a good time. Overall, a great experience.

Photo of Presley P.

This was the scariest haunted house I've ever been in! The actors are incredible! It won't disappoint you I promise.

EXTREME HAUNTING!!!!! The hollow alone is freaky and the crazy scary actors. can't wait to go again!!!

Photo of Mikayla A.

We went to Haunted Hollow in 2018 and it was amazing! So we went back last night (10/26/2019). We paid $22 each to get scared (as some twisted people do) and there were live actors for maybe 10% of it. For the first half, we kept thinking "there is for sure someone hiding it that shack" nope. "There's gotta be someone in that dark hollow in the trees," not a soul. We kept seeing other non-actors standing openly not doing anything. When we did find some actors, they were having conversations with each other and not putting any effort into their job. I was a haunted house actor and understand that it was close to closing time (we went at 11 PM, they close at midnight) but you keep putting in effort, because people PAY MONEY TO BE SCARED, but especially because it's only a couple days to Halloween. We were very disappointed and I wish we could get our money back.

Photo of Brett K.

The natural environment of Haunted Hallow adds to the spookiness. It's simply great to wander through old forests, the spooks make themselves. The layout is quite cool and some of the actors were phenomenal. However, some of the scenes felt underdeveloped, specifically the very tame Santa scene and the pirate ship. Both felt like they should have built to something bigger but when the next group came along it was just like: "Okay, I guess we're done here." Overall, it's a solid haunt worth a trip. The paintball is pretty cool.

Photo of Jesse W.

Great Haunted house. Love the outdoor experience. Great scenes and well carried out. Had a great time.

Photo of Clint W.

Last year, this place was FREAKING AMAZING opening up with a brand new zombie paintball shoot, an awesome scary trail full of freaky surprises, smartly placed scary sections, and well done choreographed events. They actually beat some of the bigger professional scary attractions in SLC! This year... This year it all was a nightmare. (no pun intended) I payed over $150 to get all of my friends in and waited TWO HOURS just to get inside! Once we got in, we encountered old and faded equipment, half-asleep actors who really didn't care about scaring us (minus a few who were super awesome!) and we walked through WHOLE SECTIONS without meeting an actor or scary automation at all! The staff was awful at moving people along, we got stuck between two large groups and had any sort of surprise or scare ruined! No wonder why the wait was so long! The paintball zombie shoot was the highlight of our evening! They didn't change A SINGLE THING since last year and the equipment was definitely starting to wear, but it was still great fun and exhilarating! In the end, I was extremely disappointed. Don't waste your money here unless you want to do the awesome paintball zombie shoot. Other than that, try the haunted attractions in SLC like Nightmare On 13th and Fear Factory, they really upped their game since the previous years and you'll be paying just as much for them anyway. You'll get more scare for your money.

Photo of Alexandra P.

This haunt holds a special place for me, because it was the first haunt I ever went to. I'm glad it was my first, because had I gone to a lower quality one to lose my haunt virginity, I may not have fell in love with haunts. Now, I take time off work every year and travel to see different haunts. It's become a bit of a hobby for me. First off, this haunt is very elaborate and I like the fact that it's outdoors. It was raining a bit the first time I went, but it didn't really bother me much. It took a while to go through the whole thing and it really utilized a lot of different haunt scares. In fact, it's good because it gives a real taste to what you can expect at different haunts, whether it's claustrophobic hallways, loud noises, strobe lights, chainsaws, moving props, mini-mazes, etc. It kind of encompasses them all. Maybe it's partly because it was my first haunt, but it's still one of my favorite haunts to visit.
