The story goes that Paul W.S. Anderson has been trying to make a film version of the video game series “Monster Hunter” since 2012, but one would never guess this after seeing the end result. Say what you will about the often critically derided films in the “ Resident Evil ” series, there’s at least a sense of style behind them that’s entirely missing for the first hour of “Monster Hunter.” That hour is bafflingly incompetent, failing to give viewers even the basic action they presume comes with a purchase or rental of something called “Monster Hunter.” At around the 70-minute mark, the Anderson who knows how to use excess for entertainment wakes up, but it will be too late for most people, who will either be asleep or figuring out if there’s a way to get a refund on their VOD rental. And then Anderson sabotages any goodwill he could have left with his viewers by dropping a non-ending designed purely to tease a sequel that seems unlikely to ever be. When it was announced, the hope was this could launch another series like “Resident Evil.” Sadly, this is going to be closer to “Soldier” on Anderson's resume. Maybe they could get the gang together for more zombie dogs?

“Monster Hunter” opens in a vast desert in country with a group of U.S. Army Rangers on patrol, led by Captain Natalie Artemis ( Milla Jovovich ). What looks like a combination sandstorm/thunderstorm rises on the horizon, and Natalie and her team are suddenly thrust into an alternate universe alongside ours that is basically more desert, but with giant, terrifying creatures. Instead of world-building, which has defeated some of his most enjoyable escapism, Anderson goes for a vast desert wasteland aesthetic, and it’s a fatal flaw. You can’t make a movie called “Monster Hunter” that’s boring to look at it, and this is one of Anderson's flattest films in every way.

After Anderson dispatches with most of Natalie’s crew, he unites his heroine with someone from this world called “The Hunter,” played by Tony Jaa . If you’re thinking, “Oh, cool, a Jovovich vs. Jaa fight has some potential,” I was on the same page, but Anderson can’t even pull that off. Working with editor Doobie White , he cuts every sequence in “Monster Hunter” into a hyperactive cinematic gruel so everything just looks and feels the same, at least for the first hour. Even when Jaa gets to show off some of his notable skills … we barely get to see them because of the choppy filmmaking.

What about the monsters? Shouldn’t a movie called “Monster Hunter” that’s co-produced by Toho scratch that itch for fans of “Godzilla” movies? Again, that mark is missed. The creature design isn’t even as elaborate or detailed as the games, feeling like the bare minimum required to satisfy a memo to an effects studio that says “make a big monster.” Some of the creature design in the “RE” movies can be grotesquely creative, but the decisions here in terms of monsters feel safe and boring.

And then something very bizarre happens. About two-thirds of the way into “Monster Hunter” it’s almost like Anderson and Jovovich get so bored that they just decide to start the wackier sequel earlier. Spotted briefly in the prologue, a scenery-chewing Ron Perlman drops into the action accompanied by a team of hunters that includes a giant cat who acts like a human. And in this moment you realize that all of “Monster Hunter” needed to be this weird. It’s not a great film at any point, but there’s style and creativity in the last act that’s a stark contrast to the dull noise that came before. If you’re gonna transport a star like Milla Jovovich to a land of monsters, why strand her in the desert for an hour and then basically become a different, more stylish movie in the final act? By the time Anderson figures out the right tone for this project, you’ll be hunting for a better movie.

Monster Hunter Review

A meowscular monstrosity..

Zaki Hasan Avatar

IGN serves a global audience, so with Monster Hunter now playing, we are re-publishing our review from Zaki Hasan who watched the movie via digital screener. Read more on IGN's policy on movie reviews in light of COVID-19 here . IGN strongly encourages anyone considering going to a movie theater during the COVID-19 pandemic to check their local public health and safety guidelines before buying a ticket.

We may be barreling towards the tail end of December, but it seems 2020 isn’t done with us yet: under the wire, it’s delivered one of the worst action movies in recent memory, and another addition to the Video Game Movie Adaptation Hall of Shame . It didn’t have to be like this – earlier this year, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog hit theaters, and, in a surprise to pretty much everyone, the altogether pleasant family pic seemed to be a sign of better things to come. Only blue skies ahead, right? Well, not so fast: here comes the latest cinematic game defenestration, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunter, to remind us how rare good video game movies are.

Anderson, who previously did reasonably well helming 1995’s Mortal Kombat and the original 2002 Resident Evil, descends into Uwe Boll levels of incomprehensibility here, creating a film breathtaking for all the ways it steps wrong. It’s rare to see a movie so utterly beholden to its own labyrinthine mythology to the point of bafflement, while also being entirely uninterested in extrapolating on it. Riven with storytelling missteps virtually from the opening scene, Monster Hunter fails to rise to even the low bar of “not good, but not terrible” that at least a few of the Resident Evil flicks (and definitely Mortal Kombat) meet.

For the uninitiated, Monster Hunter has been a popular franchise for Capcom since 2004, depicting a pre-industrial world where monsters dwell and players take on the role of the titular Hunter to track down and kill a menagerie of strange and deadly beasts. Especially given the huge success of Monster Hunter: World in 2018, which reinvigorated the series on modern consoles, it’s not hard to see why both Capcom and Sony thought there was cinematic gold in them thar monster-filled hills, especially when their previous pairing on Resident Evil seemed to work out well for both. (At least commercially, as the Resident Evil franchise has been largely critically panned but earned $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film series based on a video game.)

Monster Hunter Movie Images

monster hunter movie review rotten tomatoes

As such, it’s also easy to see why they took the plunge on Anderson’s vision, and why his wife Milla Jovovich, who previously headlined the Resident Evil movies (most recently in 2017’s abysmal Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ), was enlisted into the lead role of badass UN military commander Natalie Artemis. The problem, in addition to Artemis being a wholly original creation unconnected to the game and thus a strange person to ask fans to get on board with as the main character, is that “badass soldier” is where her character development began and ended. How do we know Artemis is a badass? Because she dismissively calls the men under her command “ladies.” Get it? Because she’s a girl! What a badass. Oh, she also has a wedding ring she keeps in her pocket and occasionally gazes at longingly, but don’t worry: it won’t matter in even the slightest way.

Artemis and her team (including actors Tip “T.I.” Harris and Meagan Good, among others) are on a mission in an anonymous stretch of desert for the United Nations when a mystical portal shunts them over to another dimension. There, they’re beset by a Black Diablos before ending up facing Nerscylla. It’s not long before attrition and Darwinism leads to Artemis becoming the Final Girl, at which point she finally makes the acquaintance of the Hunter, played by renowned martial artist Tony Jaa (Ong Bak).

Okay, so here’s a big problem: Tony Jaa is clearly the lead. Or at least he should be. That’s no slight on Jovovich’s action or acting chops, both of which are fine, but it is an acknowledgment that, within the world of the story , the actual Monster Hunter should be our central focus in a movie called, y’know, Monster Hunter.

But by resting the story on Artemis, who is herself not particularly interesting, we’re looking at the Hunter from the outside in, and we never get a sense of his motivations beyond immediate survival. And while this is obviously meant as an "origin" of sorts to see Artemis take on that Monster Hunter role (we even get a hurried training montage), that journey doesn't feel particularly earned or necessary, nor does it culminate meaningfully. And the limited amount of screentime given to Jaa just draws attention to a more interesting story we're not getting.

Also not helping is the language barrier between Artemis and Hunter as they try to work together, leading to long stretches of the two communicating in grunts and glances. Then Ron Perlman shows up. (Yep, Hellboy is in this too!) And though we see him (and Jaa) briefly in the prologue, Perlman’s arrival about two-thirds of the way in (as a character from the games called the Admiral ) still manages to feel completely tonally dissonant from everything we’ve seen before, bordering on high camp as opposed to what previously seemed to be an earnest but failed attempt at a serious story.

And truth told, if this was 100 minutes of campy Ron Perlman in a bad anime wig, it might have worked better. But his appearance here, speaking perfect English (he made a study of it, you see, from previous Earth-people who came through the portal, you see) makes you wonder why they’d wait so long to add the one character who can meaningfully lay out the world and its rules (none of which make very much sense anyway) for the audience. As it is, most will likely have lost interest well before that point.

What follows is a final showdown with a lot of dodgy CGI, quick-cuts, and some mystic hugger-mugger about closing the portal between the two worlds because, as Perlman makes clear, he doesn’t want Earth folks ending up over there making a mess of things (which, not for nothing, feels like missing the forest for the trees considering his world is the one with all the ravenous monsters that immediately made a mess of Artemis’ team). In the end, we have a dull-looking film that pays lip service to its underlying source material while striving mightily to make it palatable to a larger audience it seems doubtful will even show up. So, who is this movie aimed at?

Every IGN Monster Hunter Review

monster hunter movie review rotten tomatoes

Monster Hunter runs just over an hour and a half but feels about twice that long thanks to its listless, meandering plot devoid of a central focus or any meaningful world-building. Obviously, with any movie like this, there are franchise hopes built into the mix, especially when talking about a game series as successful and long-lived as this, but there’s a very particular hubris about the blatant sequel setup served up in lieu of any kind of emotionally or intellectually satisfying conclusion – sequel hopes that one imagines will go unfulfilled. In a sentence I don’t think would have made any sense at the beginning of 2020: This ain’t no Sonic the Hedgehog.

I, someone who is happy to admit to having played 140 hours of Monster Hunter World since its 2018 launch, was on board with the Monster Hunter movie adaptation from its opening minutes. In the first scene, we see a pirate-style ship glide across a sea of dunes. Aboard the ship is a woman, peeking out of a candle-lit window with mismatched binoculars. During the film’s publicity blitz, we knew things like the titular monsters would look fairly accurate to their video game franchise counterparts, but I was dumbfounded by how much detail and care went to cribbing every aspect of the game’s identifiable style.

What to know before going to a movie theater

As new movies open in theaters around the United States and the world, Polygon encourages its readers to consider the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and relevant safety precautions. We will continue to cover weekly theatrical releases only to the extent in which our writers feel comfortable, but will not require anyone to attend a general screening at a movie theater in instances where studios were unable to provide screening options. We encourage our readers to follow guidelines provided by the CDC, health authorities, and theaters to determine whether attendance is right for them.

For more information on the current risks of going to the movies, read our guide on the state of COVID-19 and multiplex safety.

The woman in the mismatched binoculars is simply known as The Handler, and while she has fewer lines than her chatty, cheery in-game counterpart — who’s essentially your tutorial guide in Monster Hunter: World — visually, they’re near dopplegangers. Her early appearance in the film felt shorthand to me that Monster Hunter ’s cinematic debut was done with a lot of love to the sometimes-impenetrable franchise. This wasn’t just a movie made on top of Monster Hunter, but an actual Monster Hunter movie.

That attention to detail is everywhere. After Milla Jovovich’s Captain Artemis and her Army Ranger squad are sucked through a mysterious storm into “Monster Hunter world” (I’m sorry!), every moment of the film feels primed to reward fans. All the set dressing, clothing, armor, weapons, and hair styles are ripped from the games — except for maybe Ron Perlman’s so-bad-its-bad wig. The monsters themselves are peak CG spectacle, especially the iconic Rathalos, the series mascot who gets the final showdown. Writer-director Paul W. S. Anderson loves to pull in close to the reflections in their (maybe even a bit too detailed) eyes, as they stalk Jovovich, her squad, and the Hunter she meets, played by Tony Jaa.

monster hunter movie review rotten tomatoes

The movie monsters are far more lethal than a video game power fantasy might let on. Monster Hunter isn’t afraid to drop bodies in some pretty gnarly ways, and the movie’s long first act sends the squad running from one perilous beast to another as they are picked off one by one. Anderson’s Resident Evil films were no stranger to gory deaths, but there’s at least one in Monster Hunter that felt unnecessarily gross, all to drive home the point that monsters can tear through modern armored vehicles like tissue paper. (The lopsided tank-vs.-monster matchups, despite being largely revealed in cinematic trailers, are some of the biggest gut-busting funny moments of the film.)

Naturally, the only way to take their foes down are traps, grappling hooks, and big-ass swords, all of which are equally faithful to their game counterparts, down to the ways Jaa’s Hunter swings his great sword and Jovovich wields the dual blades. The biggest great sword swings are even shot to honor their video game inspiration, often with dramatic wide shots that show the scale between human and beast.

monster hunter movie review rotten tomatoes

Despite Monster Hunter having a large supporting cast on paper, Jovovich spends chunks of the movie alone, toughing it out through wicked monsters and reinforcing her action-hero pedigree. Many of these moments are tropes we’ve seen before; she kisses a ring inscribed “forever” before cauterizing a wound on her leg with gunpowder and a flare. But the actress’ charisma brings life to the one-dimensional character, and once she teams up with Jaa, the pair’s language barrier doesn’t stop their chemistry. They learn to cooperate in the fights, and while close-cropped editing diminishes the impact of some of their longer brawls, the stunts are dramatic.

The entire movie is light in the story and character department; Jovovich’s entire Ranger squad has names like “Axe,” “Marshall,” “Dash,” and “Linc.” Anderson seems aware — the tropes felt as deliciously campy as the action. Matched with a reverence for the games, Monster Hunter ’s fan service-laden setpieces were the perfect, mindless salve for 2020. It’s hard to say if it’s comprehensible to someone who doesn’t love the series, but its bombastic action hardly lags during its hour-and-a-half run time. It’s a happy member of this new class of video game movies written with an obvious love of its lore, though possibly not able to stand up without a deep appreciation for the source material.

‘Monster Hunter’ Review: Beasts of Boredom

Milla Jovovich stars as an Army Ranger trapped in an alternate universe in this video game-derived silliness.

monster hunter movie review rotten tomatoes

By Jeannette Catsoulis

“Monster Hunter” — 80 percent monsters, 20 percent hunter — proves definitively that neither gaping wounds nor a gargantuan armored earwig can stop Milla Jovovich.

Having accompanied the film’s writer and director, Paul W.S. Anderson, through multiple chapters of his “Resident Evil” franchise, Jovovich is well prepared to class up this latest video game-derived nonsense. The opening alone is a hoot and a half: A giant galleon heaving and bucking across a storm-tossed desert, captained by a worried-looking Ron Perlman and pursued beneath the sand by the aforementioned earwig. Someone has been reading too much Frank Herbert.

The sandstorm also strands Lt. Artemis (Jovovich) and her Army Ranger unit in this parallel universe, populated by “Lost World”-style critters and the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa). When her team noisily succumbs to cave-dwelling spider-thingies that incubate their young in human skin, Artemis decides to team up with Hunter and, well, do something. He doesn’t speak English and the script doesn’t speak coherence, so their plans are necessarily vague.

Luckily, Perlman shows up again to introduce his personal chef — a man-sized cat wearing a cat-sized hat — and explain about the mysterious tower that opens the gateway between worlds and will no doubt feature prominently in the inevitable sequel. Until then, we’re left to process a Post-it-sized plot, numbing fight sequences and dialogue along the lines of “My God!” and “Aargh!”

Jovovich, though, remains limber, leggy and — like her lipstick — damn near indestructible. And that’s very good news for schlocky pictures like this one.

Monster Hunter Rated PG-13 for spider-filled pustules and poison-filled entrails. Running time: 1 hour 39 minutes. In theaters. Please consult the guidelines outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before watching movies inside theaters.

Monster Hunter movie trailer, cast, release date for the video game adaptation

Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich and Thai icon Tony Jaa team up to kill monsters in Monster Hunter , based on the Capcom games. Here’s everything to know.

monster hunter movie review rotten tomatoes

This article about the film Monster Hunter was originally published on October 15, 2020 and updated on December 18, 2021 following the movie’s release. Read on for the original article, with some new changes to reflect the latest updates on this topic.

With the Resident Evil movies behind her , Milla Jovovich is hunting a new video game film franchise to lead. And she's found it in 2020's Monster Hunter . Based on the popular Capcom video games, here's everything you need to know about Monster Hunter , including its plot synopsis, trailer, cast, story details, and more.

When is the release date for Monster Hunter ?

Monster Hunter was released in the United States on December 18, 2020 . The movie was initially scheduled to come out in April of that year, but was delayed a whole year to 2021 because of movie theaters shuttering due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But after the film had a less-than-stellar release in China in early December due to an insulting joke in the film aimed at the country causing controversy. Sony chose to bump up the U.S. release to later that month.

What is Monster Hunter ?

Monster Hunter is an adaptation of the Capcom video games. The first game was released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2. Though it received modest reviews, it spawned sequels that gave way to a franchise with a dedicated fandom.

Each game takes place in a fantasy setting where players take control of a "Hunter," who can slay or trap giant monsters across landscapes. Players level up by killing monsters to gain experience and loot to attain improved weapons, armor, and other gear. It is the second best-selling franchise at Capcom next to Resident Evil .

Monster Hunter Milla Jovovich Tony Jaa

Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa star in ‘Monster Hunter.’

What is the plot of the Monster Hunter movie?

Monster Hunter , directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (who has also helmed the billion-dollar Resident Evil film franchise with wife Jovovich), adds the usual Hollywood zhush that is typically not popular with hardcore fans but appealing to a broad audience.

In a change of setting that drew criticism from fans, the film takes place in the modern-day as a United Nations military unit falls through a portal that places them in another world populated by monsters. There, the soldiers meet "The Hunter," a native who knows how to fight and kill the monsters.

Where can I watch the trailer for Monster Hunter ?

Sony released the trailer for Monster Hunter on October 14, 2020, which you can see in the embed below.

Who is starring in Monster Hunter ?

Monster Hunter has a surprisingly strong cast that will make it worth the price of admission. Or rental.

  • Milla Jovovich ( Resident Evil ) as Captain Natalie Artemis, leader of a U.N. military team.
  • Tony Jaa ( Ong-Bak ) as The Hunter, an alien native who knows how to kill and hunter monsters.
  • Clifford "T.I." Harris ( Ant-Man ) as a unit soldier, Link.
  • Meagan Good ( Shazam! ) as another, currently unnamed soldier.
  • Diego Boneta ( Terminator: Dark Fate ) in an unnamed role.
  • Josh Helman ( Mad Max Fury Road ) in an unnamed role.
  • Jin "MC Jin" Au-Yeung in an unnamed role.
  • Ron Perlman ( Hellboy ) as Admiral.

Monster Hunter Gore Magala

Gore Magala, one of the most popular monsters in the 'Monster Hunter' franchise, appears in the trailer for the movie.

Why is Monster Hunter drawing criticism?

The issue fans are taking with the film is that it isn't tapping into the game's inherent colorful fantasy setting and instead spotlighting heroes from a modern-day western military.

While each Monster Hunter game is different, all of them are variations of a party of fantastical heroes hunting for monsters in vivid worlds. While the trailer for the movie does feature big swords, big monsters, and other worlds, the aesthetic is still too familiar and safe. The movie bears a strong resemblance to Anderson's Resident Evil films, a series of wildly lucrative movies that creatively divorced itself from the games.

Can I see more images of Monster Hunter ?

Sure! Sony has already released a collection of hi-res images from the movie, which you can see below.

Milla Jovovich Monster Hunter

Milla Jovovich stars in 'Monster Hunter' as a U.N. military squad leader whose unit lands in another world full of monsters.

Milla Jovovich Monster Hunter

Tony Jaa Monster Hunter

Tony Jaa, a Thai superstar trained in Muay Thai kickboxing, stars in 'Monster Hunter' as a character known only as "The Hunter."

What did critics have to say about Monster Hunter ?

Monster Hunter has a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 47 on Metacritic . The reviews were mixed, with many praising the imagery and action, criticizing the lack of creativity or coherence in its plot and characters.

Monster Hunter arrived in theaters on December 30, 2020.

MAD MILLA FURY ROAD

Hardly anything extraneous here including all of its silly excess and goofy sense of humor. Anderson's cutting has sped up but this is far more coherent than his last couple outings. Probably his best movie since RESIDENT EVIL 5, maybe even his second best movie, period.

Monster Hunter won't convert any skeptics to the B-movie pleasures of Paul W.S. Anderson, but it'll surely satisfy anyone on his wavelength. Anderson's typically stellar sense of expansive geography and corridor warfare sets this apart from its often cheap CGI, as does Doobie White's editing, exemplifying a constant spatial awareness in spite of the quick, rabid cutting. So much care is placed in the movements of the actors amidst the obstacle of the monsters. Above all, it's the lean pacing that keeps the energy up, but possibly at the cost of fleshing out its more complex ideas regarding imperialism. At its best, Monster Hunter plays like a tactical re-working of Fury Road . A banger synth score too! Don't know if I'd put this up with the best of Anderson's work ( Resident Evil: Retibution , AVP , or Event Horizon ), but it's great fun.

The opening few minutes of Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Monster Hunter” are such a delightful eruption of unfettered, goofy-ass, who-cares-what-your-parents-think nerdcore that it seems as if the director of 1995’s “Mortal Kombat” (and the “Resident Evil” series after that) has reset video game movies back to the good old days when they weren’t bogged down by delusions of respectability — when they were memorably bad instead of just dull or “Assassin’s Creed.” If only.

The “Monster Hunter” franchise, which might be helpful for neophytes to think of as the Pepsi to Pokémon’s Coke, has always stood out for its high fantasy trappings, and boy oh boy does Anderson embrace those in a big way right out of the gate. We open…

Last Resident Evil made clear that PWSA really loved Fury Road and he mostly repurposes the desert setting and relentless pace for his own personal uses. The mid section which has Jovovich and Jaa walking around desert with ocassional monsters is pretty much everything one might hope from an Anderson film: minimum plot (they don't even speak the same language for exposition), some lowbrow humor, lots of creative creature work and a camera that keeps adapting for space. Just watching the different ways can purpos entrapment out of open space is more than worth on pure formalist grounds. The interplay between Jovovich and Jaa is pretty good too, but every character that isn’t them, Ron Perlman or a cat is…

I got stoned and wrote about Monster Hunter.

Sample here:

As an idiot of the “Vulgar Auteurism” Hall of Fame and alumni of goofy film shit that ultimately meant nothing, I can proudly state that I have been on the front-lines of praising shit like DTV action movies and Paul W.S. Anderson’s video game flicks for the better part of a decade. I have Gamer on DVD and everything. Anyway, so with Monster Hunter you’re getting exactly what it says on the tin, there’s some monsters and they need-a-hunting. With the flimsiest slapdash plot stapled onto this thing where a soldier (Mila Jovovich, who is a confirmed Bernie-Bro) is trying to get to the other side of the mystical sand-storm…

Monster Hunter movie ending explained: your biggest questions answered

Breaking down Monster Hunter's final act

Monster Hunter ending

The Monster Hunter movie ending answered a bunch of questions – including who wins in a fight between a dragon and a helicopter – but left a bunch more dangling, either waiting to be answered by a sequel or for fans to connect the dots elsewhere.

Below, we answer any major lore questions that arose from the movie after watching it, as well as any other posers that will hopefully enrich the lore of the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed video game adaptation.

First, to ensure we’re all on the same page, here’s a Palico-sized recap of the Monster Hunter ending – including all major events and story beats.

Warning: Monster Hunter spoilers follow…

The Monster Hunter movie – spoilers!

The final half of the movie sees Artemis – now having escaped the clutches of Nerscylla monsters – and the Hunter heading towards the Sky Tower so she can head back through the portal to her own world. Of course, the road ahead isn’t without its bumps and bruises. The pair are saved by the Hunter’s crew (after he fell from their ship earlier in the movie) led by Ron Perlman’s Admiral.

They, too, are heading to the Sky Tower to take down the Rathalos guarding the power source.

Once there, the Rathalos attacks the squad, though the Admiral leads the fightback. During one climatic moment, Artemis is cornered and dives over the edge of the cliff as the Sky Tower and the portal powers up. She then leaps through the portal and back to the desert in ‘our’ world – the setting at the beginning of the movie.

There, she is rescued by a task force and is evacuated. Unfortunately for them, the Rathalos flies through the portal and burns everyone to a crisp – except Artemis.

Artemis then exploits the Rathalos’ one weakness – its gaping mouth before it breathes fire – and shoots an explosive round down its gullet. The Hunter then appears and helps Artemis slay the beast.

To end the movie, the Admiral warns that another attack is imminent. Artemis agrees to head back through the portal to kill the beast and shut down the Sky Tower. The team jump through the portal and the movie ends.

In the Monster Hunter post-credits scene, the trio are seen fighting a new monster, with the Palico chef even joining in on the fun in a particularly a-mew-sing moment. Finally, a hooded man is seen watching the battle.

Is the portal between the two worlds closed for good?

It doesn’t appear to be. The Admiral made pointed reference earlier in the movie to the Sky Tower sitting on top of a lava-based power source that helps fire up the portal that allows travel between the two worlds.

The portal has also been around for a long time. Perlman’s character also explained to Artemis that ‘The Ancients’ had gone back and forth between the two worlds several hundred years ago.

However, if the Sky Tower gets destroyed then it’s a completely different story – and a dilemma for Artemis that could be explored in the sequel. For now, it’s intact – which means monsters can travel to the human world and vice-versa. Which means there’s plenty of opportunity for some creepy-crawly crossovers in future instalments.

Is the Rathalos dead?

The Rathalos, an iconic monster from the Monster Hunter franchise, served as the movie’s Big Bad. Eventually, it was vanquished thanks to a combination of the Admiral’s fire attacks, the Hunter’s laser precision with his bow, and Artemis’ explosive rounds. The monster we see at the very end is not a Rathalos. Despite the confusion, the Rathalos is certainly dead and gone.

Monster Hunter movie ending

Are the rest of the crew still alive?

We hope so! Aiden, Lea, and Handler were all knocked out or knocked back during the Rathalos fight and we don’t get to see their final fates. Expect to find out if – and how – they survived the onslaught in a possible sequel.

What is the “ancient civilization”?

Unfortunately, Monster Hunter’s mid-point reference to an “ancient civilization” isn’t really built upon. It does, however, have several lore-based explanations via the games to fall back on.

The Ancient Civilization were a mysterious group that were technologically far more advanced than any other civilization in the years following their extinction. They often used and captured monsters for their own purposes, and even built the Tower – the inspiration for the movie’s Sky Tower. Their mastery over both technology and the monsters essentially ushered in a Golden Age, though their experimentations using dragons eventually led them to being wiped out during the Great Dragon War.

Why is the Sky Tower so important?

The Sky Tower is not only one of the last remaining remnants of the Ancient Civilization’s work, it also is a bridge between the world of the monsters and ‘our’ world – where Artemis is from. Throughout history, various humans have jumped across to the monster world thanks to the Sky Tower, though it’s not known how it is activated or why Artemis and her team of soldiers were able to pass through in the first place.

Monster Hunter movie ending

What was the monster at the end?

Monster Hunter, oddly, sets up a new villain at the 90-minute mark… and makes us wait for a sequel to see what it is and whether it’ll be defeated by the Hunters.

But, if you know your wyverns from your akantors, you’ll recognise the distinctive claws and dragon-like posture immediately.

The monster in the final shot is a Gore Magala – best known for its appearance in Monster Hunter 4.

Who was the hooded man in the post-credits?

The hooded man may as well have been holding a neon sign that said ‘sequel’ – but who is he? The only parallels to that mysterious figure and the Monster Hunter series of games is the Seeker from 2017’s Monster Hunter: World .

There, the Seeker was part of the first wave of hunters who arrived in the game’s land of Astera, where the monsters of the game roamed. He is dedicated to unlocking the secrets of the world, including how the Elder Crossing – the journey an Elder Dragon takes before dying – causes the creation of new worlds.

So, all of your Monster Hunter lorehounds out there can rest assured that, if Monster Hunter 2 happens, it’s about to dive deep into some of the seriously dense background history behind the world(s) of the games.

Monster Hunter movie ending

Will there be a sequel?

2020 has proven that nothing is predictable. What we do know is that director Paul W.S. Anderson is working on a new Monster Hunter project.

Star (and Anderson's wife) Milla Jovovich told Total Film in November, "Hopefully people are going to love it because I know Paul would love to make a sequel. I mean, he’s already writing something..."

The Monster Hunter Movie: What Went Wrong?

This live-action 2020 adaptation of Capcom's beloved action franchise was forgotten before it left theaters, but why didn't it work out?

Humanity has finally escaped the era of awful video game movies. Terrible examples still see theaters, but it's no longer a foregone conclusion. Netflix has discovered animated series as the best venue for the genre, but the movies will still come. Audiences are prepared to give video game movies the benefit of the doubt, but they'll still see rough examples. Monster Hunter won't tarnish the idea because it disappeared from minds almost instantly.

Paul W. S. Anderson should receive an award for video game cinema. He has produced a long line of awful entries in the genre but is more committed to it than anyone else. His opus is still the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie , which excised elements of the games but still had fun with the idea. Anderson directed seven Resident Evil movies, each less intelligent than the last. Monster Hunter is his latest video game adaptation, but it's not likely to be his last.

Monster Hunter: Ranking All The Monsters That Appear In The Movie

What is the monster hunter series of games.

Monster Hunter is an action franchise rapidly approaching its 20th anniversary. The first game launched on the PS2 in 2004 with mild critical appeal and significant financial success. Capcom has released five mainline sequels and a dozen spin-offs. Monster Hunter is Capcom's second-highest-selling series after Resident Evil . It defeated Mega Man , Street Fighter , Devil May Cry , and Dead Rising for the title. The franchise has a strong cult following that evolved into massively mainstream appeal with the release of Monster Hunter World in 2018. The games aren't well-known for their story. Their unique gameplay secures their legacy.

Monster Hunter revolves around the player as a mighty warrior given great importance by their culture and tasked with defeating powerful beasts. It's a simple loop in which the player hunts monsters, claims their parts, and fashions them into armor or weapons to hunt more monsters. While some missions require helping locals or capturing specific animals, the meat of the experience is the simple joy of carving horns off dragons and using them to kill mightier dragons. It's a pure and honest franchise, the kind of game kids in movies would play. It's one of the more challenging video games to adapt because it's nothing without the interactive aspect. Paul W. S. Anderson updated the material by adding a squad of soldiers to the mix as POV characters and letting them experience the world as the audience does.

What is the Monster Hunter movie about?

The Monster Hunter franchise is set in the "New World," where societies live in rough settlements and fight mighty animals. The film imagines the New World as an alternate dimension accessible only through hidden portals. Milla Jovovich stars as Natalie Artemis, a U.S. Army Ranger Captain leading a small detachment of U.N. soldiers. While looking for missing soldiers, they find a portal that drops them into the New World. Martial arts legend Tony Jaa portrays a nameless Hunter, the role players would take in the game. The Hunter saves Artemis and her soldiers, but they discover that their guns and bombs can't harm the local monsters. They find that the portal home can only be accessed by crossing a long desert. They must fight the horned wyvern Diablos to cross the sands and travel back to Earth. It's a simple premise, a fish-out-of-water action piece that pits modern military might against monsters.

Why did the Monster Hunter movie fail?

As video game movies go, Monster Hunter is miles from the worst. It's a brainless action romp with a few striking visuals and almost no story worth addressing. It received a 44% positive score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, higher than most entries in the genre. Critics have a unified voice on this one, generally describing it as a paper-thin excuse for some CGI fight scenes. It's a positive for some and a negative for others. Paul W. S. Anderson cuts refreshingly to the quick with a tight 100-minute action movie with a few solid monster action scenes. Ultimately, the film's quality had little to do with its financial returns. It dropped in December 2020, deep into the COVID-19 pandemic. Monster Hunter grossed $44.5 million against a $60 million budget. It was a disappointment to all involved. People weren't willing to brave the possibility of illness to see Monster Hunter . Holding it back a few months or even a year might have helped it perform better.

Monster Hunter is almost exactly what one should expect from a movie based on the games . On one hand, trying to adapt a franchise sold entirely on its gameplay loop was always a bad idea. On the other, the franchise has a striking visual style that would be a joy to see played out with appropriate special effects. Monster Hunter may never get another shot at the big screen, but it doesn't need one. Some franchises belong to the medium they were designed for. Monster Hunter knows what it is and what it's meant to be.

6 Movie Franchises With Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Streaks

  • Movie franchises face challenges maintaining a positive critical reception over time, but some have lengthy " fresh " streaks on Rotten Tomatoes
  • The Marvel Cinematic Universe and Harry Potter maintained impressive positive streaks until recent releases broke them.
  • Most franchises don't get more than five " fresh " movies in a row, but for Indiana Jones and The Hunger Games, that encompasses all their movies.

Rotten Tomatoes isn't a perfect indicator of whether a movie franchise is worthwhile or not, but those that maintain long streaks of " fresh " scores typically do so for a reason . Many movie franchises start off strong — enough so that they spawn multiple sequels and spinoffs — then steadily decline or dip in places throughout their runs. It's difficult for an IP to keep a high quality with every release, and this is especially true for the longest-running movie franchises .

Some franchises bounce back from these low points, while others cut their losses. And a select few do manage impressive review streaks before ending or falling off. Even if these franchises don't consistently get above 90% for all of their movies, they successfully maintain fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes' platform for years at a time . Given how unpredictable critic scores can be, this is no easy feat; it speaks to a franchise's consistency and quality when it's able to do this.

10 Movie Franchises That Became Too Big For Their Own Good

The marvel cinematic universe - fresh rotten tomatoes scores for 25 movies, streak started with iron man & ended with eternals, marvel cinematic universe (mcu).

Created by Kevin Feige

First Film Iron Man

Latest Film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Upcoming Films Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has recently struggled with reviews and box office numbers, but the movie franchise had a lengthy positive streak that lasted through The Infinity Saga . Starting with Iron Man in 2008, the MCU maintained "fresh" Rotten Tomatoes scores for every movie up until The Eternals , which received a "rotten" 47% from critics. A 25-movie streak is incredibly impressive, and it's something most other franchises haven't accomplished. While not every film from this era of the MCU is the same in terms of reception and quality, even the less-loved ones, like Thor: The Dark World, boast a fresh score above 60%.

Despite breaking its fresh streak with Eternals, the MCU has already made something of a comeback in terms of critic scores . Movies released right after Eternals, like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , have resumed getting above 60%. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the only other MCU film to receive a rotten score, coming in at 46%.

Universal Monsters Movies - Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Scores For 17 Movies

Started with the hunchback of notre dame & ended with the mummy's tomb.

The Universal Classic Monster movies were huge hits from the 1920s to the 1950s, and given the films' positive reception over several decades, it's no wonder the studio is trying to reignite it with the Dark Universe . Although some of Universal's later monster movies received negative critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes , the franchise remained consistently fresh across 17 consecutive films . Starting with the first movie in the franchise — 1923's The Hunchback of Notre Dame — Universal's monster movies boast fresh scores until 1942's The Mummy's Tomb.

Even after The Mummy 's Tomb, a handful of Universal monster movies received fresh critic scores — though the number of rotten ratings increased notably. And Universal's recent attempts at monster movies have mostly failed. 2023's vampire films, Renfield and The Last Voyage of Demeter both received under 60%. And most monster movies to come out after 2000 met similar fates, with 2020's The Invisible Man being a noteworthy exception.

The Batman Franchise - Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Scores For 14 Movies

Started with batman & mr. freeze: subzero & ended with batman v superman: dawn of justice.

Created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger

First Film Batman (1989)

Latest Film The Batman

Upcoming Films The Batman Part II

Batman movies can be hit or miss, but 14 of them received fresh critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes between the years of 1998 and 2016. Many of the films included in Batman 's fresh streak include animated movies, which dominated the franchise on the heels of 1997's critically panned Batman & Robin . However, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy also helped maintain the franchise's positive reception during this time period. Sadly, the Batman movie franchise's streak was broken by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, which got a mere 29% score from Rotten Tomatoes critics.

Fortunately, Batman 's projects seem to be on an upward trajectory again. 2019's Joker and 2022's The Batman bode well for the IP's future, especially since both are getting sequels. If these series continue to " wow " moviegoers, Batman could see another fresh streak in the near future .

Harry Potter - Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Scores For 9 Movies

Started with harry potter and the sorcerer's stone & ended with fantastic beasts: the crimes of grindelwald, harry potter.

Harry Potter is a multimedia franchise about an orphaned boy who enrolls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family, and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. Adapted from the novels, Harry Potter is an eight-episode film saga that follows the journey of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, as they navigate the tricky world of growing up, school life, and magic. Starting from year one and moving to their seventh year, the films chronicle the students' time at Hogwarts while unfurling a sinister plot that centers around the unsuspecting Harry. With the return of the dark wizard, Voldemort, the students and professors at Hogwarts will fight to carry on as the world around them may change forever. Harry Potter has expanded beyond the world of its films and novels with several video games, a spin-off film series titled Fantastic Beasts, and even attractions at Universal Studios.

Created by J.K. Rowling

First Film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Cast Alfred Enoch, Katie Leung, Dan Fogler, Jason Isaacs, David Tennant, Ralph Fiennes, Ezra Miller, Mads Mikkelsen, Gary Oldman, Tom Felton, Eddie Redmayne, Richard Harris, Harry Melling, Matthew Lewis, Oliver Phelps, James Phelps, Bonnie Wright, Evanna Lynch, Imelda Staunton, Michael Gambon, Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, Emma Watson, Warwick Davis, Timothy Spall, Rupert Grint, Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, Katherine Waterston, Jude Law, Jamie Campbell Bower, Helena Bonham Carter, David Thewlis, David Bradley, Daniel Radcliffe, Alison Sudol, Alan Rickman

The Harry Potter franchise boasted critical acclaim for most of its run , and only recent movies have broken its positive streak on Rotten Tomatoes . The original Harry Potter series, which consists of eight films, has overwhelmingly positive scores on the site. In fact, none of the original Harry Potter movies has below a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Even the first Fantastic Beasts movie boasts a fresh 74%, indicating that the franchise's quality only dipped very recently. Due to controversies surrounding the IP and film, as well as other complaints, the final two Fantastic Beasts films are both under 50%.

With Warner Bros. pivoting its approach to Harry Potter to television, the franchise may not be able to come back from its negative reception on the movie end. However, the upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot could reignite interest in the property and lead to more films later on. It all depends on what response the new series gets, and it will be a while before it premieres.

Indiana Jones - Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Scores For 5 Movies

Started with raiders of the lost ark & ended with indiana jones and the dial of destiny, indiana jones.

Created by George Lucas, Indiana Jones is an action-adventure multimedia franchise that began with the launch of its first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, in 1981. The series follows Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr., an archaeologist who adventures across the world with various friends as he faces off against the likes of Nazis and other groups bent on collecting ancient artifacts of power. Seeking to preserve history, Jones races against his incidental foes to stop them from conquering - or destroying- the world.

Created by George Lucas

First Film Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

Cast Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliott, Alison Doody, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Mads Mikkelsen, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Julian Glover, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Kate Capshaw, Ray Winstone, John Rhys-Davies

The Indiana Jones franchise arose from the 1981 classic — and unlike many other hits from this time period, it maintained a consistent quality over five films and four decades. While franchises like Jurassic Park bounce up and down in terms of the critical reception to their sequels, Indiana Jones boasts fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores for all five of its films. And while a five-movie streak on Rotten Tomatoes isn't completely uncommon, it's rare to see a franchise that is complete and doesn't have a single rotten score .

Even 1992's TV show, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles , boasts a 78% critic score, highlighting the franchise's positive legacy. While recent Indiana Jones installments don't necessarily live up to the original film, there's no denying they do a better job at reigniting the franchise than most reboots and sequels. They also offer a satisfying conclusion, so it's no wonder they boast fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores.

The Hunger Games Franchise - Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Scores For 5 Movies

Started with the hunger games & ended with the ballad of songbirds and snakes, the hunger games.

The Hunger Games is a multi-movie franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. The films are based on the young adult dystopian book series by author Suzanne Collins. The first film was released in 2012, followed by Catching Fire in 2013, Mockingjay Part 1 in 2014, and Mockingjay Part 2 in 2015. In 2023, the fifth film in the series was released, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Created by Suzanne Collins

First Film The Hunger Games

Cast Tom Blyth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Peter Dinklage, Stanley Tucci, Jason Schwartzman, Hunter Schafer, Rachel Zegler, Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence, Viola Davis, Willow Shields, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Lenny Kravitz, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland

Like Indiana Jones, the Hunger Games is on the shorter side when it comes to movie franchises, but its impressive, five-movie Rotten Tomatoes streak encompasses its entire run . The Hunger Games and Catching Fire kick things off strongly with 84% and 90% critic scores, respectively. And even though the later installments and recent Hunger Games prequel all fall in the 60s, they successfully maintain the dystopian franchise's fresh reception on the platform.

Receiving critical acclaim for every movie in a franchise is no easy feat, but given The Hunger Games' impact and quality, it's no surprise that the adaptation manages it. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes 2 is unlikely to happen, but if it does, it risks breaking The Hunger Games' streak if its score falls too far below the original prequel. This is the case for any new Hunger Games movie that makes its way onto Rotten Tomatoes , but only time will tell if that's a concern. The franchise could very well end with its 2023 release.

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed As First Reviews Stomp Online

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed As First Reviews Stomp Online

The review embargo for Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lifted earlier today, and we now have an early Rotten Tomatoes score for the latest MonsterVerse movie...

By now, you should really know what you're going to get from one of these MonsterVerse movies, and if the last few weren't your cup of tea, it doesn't sound like Legendary's latest effort is going to make you a convert.

The review embargo for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lifted earlier today, and critics have been sharing their verdicts on Adam Wingard's follow-up to Godzilla Vs. Kong.

So far, the reviews read pretty much as you'd expect: praise for the monster fights and overall spectacle, but it sounds like the nonsensical plot and dull human characters bring the whole thing down.

That said, most of the verdicts do seem to be leaning positive, and the movie has (so far) managed to avoid the dreaded green splat on Rotten Tomatoes with a so-so 62%.

Though this score is sure to change over the next few days, 100 reviews have already been counted, so it may not fluctuate that much.

Rebecca Hall (Dr. Ilene Andrews), Brian Tyree Henry (Bernie Hayes) and Kaylee Hottle (Jia) will reprise their roles from the previous movie, but Millie Bobby Brown and Alexander Skarsgård will not be back, with Legion alum Dan Stevens taking over as the main protagonist. Fala Chen, Alex Ferns and Rachel House also joined the cast.

Director Adam Wingard will collaborate once more with production designer Tom Hammock, editor Josh Schaeffer, and composer Tom Holkenborg. Terry Rossio is back on script duties, along with Jeremy Slater and Wingard's frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.

"This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

The story sees the legendary Titans Godzilla and Kong team up to face a world-ending threat so terrifying that neither could survive alone."

Anaconda trailer reveals chinese remake of 1997 monster movie.

A new trailer for Anaconda reveals the Chinese remake of the iconic 1997 jungle adventure film that starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, and Ice Cube.

The new trailer for Anaconda reveals an upcoming remake of the monster film. Anaconda was first released in 1997, following the plot of a National Geographic film crew who is taken hostage by an unhinged hunter who forces them to join him on a quest to capture the world’s largest snake. The 1997 survival thriller featured a leading cast including Jon Voight, Jennifer Lopez, Eric Stoltz, Ice Cube, and Owen Wilson.

A new trailer from HKCinema reveals the Chinese remake of Anaconda .

The trailer begins by showing a look at a giant snake constricting an adult man. The trailer then scales back to unveil some of the lore surrounding the snake, including a powerful snake called Scarlet Naga. Soon, the Anaconda trailer devolves into a serpent-filled, action-packed look at the remake.

Can The Anaconda Remake Match the Original?

2024’s Anaconda is co-directed by Hesheng Xiang and Qiuliang Xiang, the directorial duo behind the 2018 Chinese action film Monkey King and City of Demons . It features a leading cast including Nita Lei, Terrence Yin, Paul Che, and Xingchen Wang. Yin is an actor who has occasionally crossed over into American films, including Lara Croft in 2003.

Anaconda 2 Features The Most Disturbing Death Of The Series

In 2024, it will be hard to fully recapture the campy magic of 1997’s Anaconda . While it was an action film, there is an inherent goofiness to the ‘90s film, driven partially by its Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez led-cast . Anaconda was not well-reviewed among critics, getting a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a lower 24% among viewers. Nonetheless, Anaconda has persisted in the cultural memory, as evidenced by its sequels and 2024 remake.

One of the principal reasons for the 1997 Anaconda ’s cult classic status is because of the creation of its monster. Partially animatronic and partially CGI, the snake’s appearance in Anaconda became a critical element of the film. Using modern technology to more fully CGI animate the snake may distill the campy impact of the film. Based on the trailer, the 2024 remake of Anaconda will lean heavily into the film’s action. Hopefully, the Anaconda remake can do that successfully as it prepares for release later this year.

The 1997 version of Anaconda is available to stream on Netflix.
