Who picks which jerseys nba teams wear each game, by max molski • published june 2, 2022 • updated on june 2, 2022 at 6:53 pm.

The days of home and away jerseys in the NBA are done, at least in a nominal sense.

The NBA norm used to be white jerseys for the home team and team-color jerseys for the road team. These days, each team has four jerseys with a handful of organizations having five.

With 123 uniforms across the NBA, who gets the final say in which team wears what on a given night?

Do NBA teams get to choose what jerseys they wear in a game?

Not anymore.

Players used to have a say in what uniforms they would wear on the court. That changed in 2017, when Nike started an eight-year apparel deal with the league.

“The league gives us a master schedule,” Celtics travel and equipment coordinator John Connor told The Boston Herald in 2018. “We put it on the wall and we just give out what’s on the wall. We get the schedule and what we’re supposed to wear from the league, and it’s for the whole year.

Joe Mazzulla: ‘It's been an honor' to coach Jaylen Brown

“It used to be Paul Pierce saying, ‘Hey, let’s wear the green/black ones.’ Not anymore. The players can’t control it.”

Where is the NBA’s uniform schedule?

The master schedule Connor is talking about got a new home before the league’s 75th anniversary season. The league posted a season-long uniform calendar on its LockerVision website, giving everyone a glimpse at what the jersey matchup would be for each game.

Do NBA teams still have home and away jerseys?

Teams’ uniforms are broken down into five editions: Association, Icon, Statement, City and Classic.

Association Edition is each team’s conventional white jersey that would have previously been deemed its “home” jersey. The Icon Edition is each team’s conventional “road” jersey. Statement and City Editions take a spin on a team’s uniforms, going with some kind of alternative color or design. The Boston Celtics , Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks are the three teams that got Classic Edition uniforms for the 75th anniversary season.

Along with a name switch, the role for each jersey changed. The league has deviated from the “home whites” standard even though the jerseys still exist, spreading out the jersey assignments across the many editions for each team no matter where they are playing.

For instance, the Celtics wore their white Association Edition uniforms for seven road games and their green Icon Edition uniforms for seven home games during the regular season. Here’s a breakdown of how often the Celtics wore each jersey during the regular season:

  • Association: 13 home, 7 away
  • Icon: 7 home, 11 away
  • Statement: 5 home, 8 away
  • City: 7 home, 8 away
  • Classic: 9 home, 7 away

What jerseys will the Celtics wear in the Finals?

The Celtics were given a more traditional uniform assignment during the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat . Boston wore its white Association Edition jerseys for two of its three home games and green Icon Edition jerseys for three of its four road games. The team sported its black Statement Edition uniforms for Games 5 and 6 of that series.

In the Finals , the Celtics will follow the old uniform arrangement in six of their seven games against the Warriors. They will wear their Icon Edition uniform for Games 1, 2 and 7 on the road, Association Edition uniform for Games 3, 4 and 6 at home and Statement Edition uniform for Game 5 in San Francisco.

The Warriors, meanwhile, will wear their Association Edition uniform for Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 at home. On the road, they will wear their black City Edition uniform for Games 3 and 4 and their blue Icon Edition uniform for Game 6 at TD Garden.

What NBA Jersey should I buy? The ultimate NBA Jersey buyers guide

By: Author Ady

Posted on Published: September 29, 2019  - Last updated: December 28, 2023

Buying a new NBA jersey can be a complicated decision with all the different variants that are now available, but don’t worry were here at Basketball Noise with the ultimate NBA jersey buying guide.

Quick answer is of course to buy the jersey of your favourite player, be that Michael Jordan, James Harden or Steph Curry, but a quick look at the vast array of jerseys available starts to complicate matters. What’s the difference between an association or statement jersey? Should I buy a Swingman or authentic ? Nike or Mitchell & Ness? We break down all the terminology below to cut through the Noise.

Current NBA jerseys:

Since the start of the 2017-18 season all NBA jerseys have been produced by Nike. When Nike became the official league outfitter they disregarded the old Home, Road and Alternate naming conventions. This has now been replaced by Association, Icon and Statement jerseys so what does this mean?

Association Jerseys:

Traditionally NBA teams used to wear ‘Home Whites’, this meant that the home team used to always wear their White ‘Home’ jersey when playing in front of their own fans, there was a few notable exceptions such as the Lakers Gold ‘Home’ jersey. Nike rebranded the ‘Home’ jerseys as ‘Association jerseys’ however this change resulted in a key new details, teams could now decide which colour to wear at home and no longer were tied to a ‘Home White’ jersey.

Icon Jerseys:

The old ‘Road’ jerseys were also rebranded as ‘Icon Jerseys’. These are the primary colour jerseys that are often most closely associated with teams, such as the Chicago Bulls in Red, the San Antonio Spurs in Black, The Los Angeles Lakers in Gold and the Golden State Warriors in Blue. With the change in naming teams were now free to designate whichever jersey they wanted as a home jersey with several teams such as the Bulls moving their Icon jersey to become their home jersey.

Statement Jerseys:

The Statement jersey is the team’s opportunity to make a bold pitch about what the organisation represents, for each team these jerseys are supposed to express the spirit of the current roster. Some teams have used this opportunity better than others with some stand out Statement jersey including the Golden State Warriors ‘The Town’ jersey, the Minnesota Timberwolves lucid lime green jersey and the Denver Nuggets rather nice ‘Mile High City’ jersey that celebrates Denver’s high-altitude geography. These jerseys have replaced the old Alternate jerseys.

City Jerseys:

One of the most successful additions to the NBA jersey line up has been the addition of the City jerseys, these are a celebration of either the city/town/state where the team resides or notable residents. In previous years some of the most successful city jerseys have been the ones celebrating local celebrities such as the Brooklyn Nets ‘Biggie’ jersey or the Minnesota Timberwolves ‘Prince’ jerseys. Perhaps the most success City jersey of all has been the Miami Heat ‘Vice’ jersey, these jerseys really encapsulate the spirit of Miami and have been so successful that the theme has been carried out over several seasons with White, Black and Pink colourways and a rumoured Blue version for this season. The new City jerseys for 2019/20 season will be released in November 2019.

Earned Jerseys:

Last year Nike rewarded the 8 teams that made the playoffs in each conference the previous season with an ‘Earned’ jersey. These were an alternate colourway of that seasons ‘City’ jersey. The headliner was the Miami Heat ‘Pink Vice’ jersey. Nike have confirmed that they will not be releasing Earned jerseys in the 2019/20 season.

Christmas day Jerseys:

When Adidas were the official league provider they made a tradition of Christmas day jerseys, that were worn by the teams unlucky enough to have to play on Christmas day! Nike have so far resisted producing Christmas day jerseys.

Type of jersey:

Once you have decided which NBA jersey you want to buy you know need to decide which type of jersey you want. There are three levels to NBA jersey, and can be classified easily as good, better and best. We have listed the jerseys below however, Ady and James also discuss the jerseys on the Basketball Noise Youtube Channel (click to subscribe) . You can see their discussion below, its worth the watch:

Good – FastBreak Jerseys:

The FastBreak jerseys are currently only available in the USA. Produced by Fanatics (the guys that run the official NBAStore) these jerseys are a good entry price point product. The cheapest of all NBA jerseys they are a replica or takedown of the jerseys the players wear on court . Names and numbers are screen printed onto the jerseys and the jerseys generally have a boxier fit with wider shoulders than those worn in the NBA. A perfect product for young kids or new NBA fans.

Better – Swingman jerseys:

Swingman jerseys are the most commonly available NBA jerseys and are currently produced by Nike. They are made from 100% recycled polyester from plastic bottles and come with Nike Connected technology allowing you to download an app on your phone and access exclusive team and player content from Nike. The Player name and numbers are applied using a heat sealing technology and the premium mesh fabric with Dri-FIT technology wicks sweat away from your skin to keep you dry. These jerseys are a lot slimmer than the Fast Break versions and are an extremely close representation of what NBA players wear on court. For the majority of fans these are the perfect way to showcase your fandom!

Best – Authentic Jerseys:

If only the best will do and money is no object you can purchase an NBA authentic jersey, these are exactly the same jerseys as worn on the court but the price tag reflects this, with these jerseys coming in at double the price of the Swingman jerseys. The name and numbers on these jerseys are all stitched with PowerTwill authentic zigzag stitches, they are made with 100% recycled polyester and have the exact same cut with taped neckline and armholes as per the jerseys worn on court by the pro’s.

Hardwood Classic jerseys:

If none of the current generation of NBA stars inspires you to buy a jersey, you can always look back at the rich history of the NBA and purchase a throwback jersey.

Currently Mitchell and Ness produce all the NBA throwback jerseys with a plethora of options. They follow the same naming convention as the Nike jerseys when it comes to types with both Swingman and Authentic jerseys and shorts being available. These can be easily identified by the hang tags in the bottom right hand corner of all jerseys.

Mitchell and Ness Swingman jerseys:

These bad boys are a near perfect copy of your old favourites, featuring a who’s who of former NBA greats they have a superb range of players and teams from the NBA’s glory years. The jerseys themselves are high quality mesh body, with printed twill logos, names and numbers. You can tell a genuine Mitchell and Ness jerseys by the woven name and year ID patch in the bottom right hand corner of every jersey.

Mitchell and Ness Authentic Jerseys:

These are the embodiment of the Mitchell and Ness values, Premium, Legendary and Authentic. They are of extremely high quality and are as close to exact replicas of your hero’s jerseys as is possible. Mitchell and Ness painstaking look to recreate every detail from the original including matching colours and materials, and properly stitched names and numbers. The authentic range also includes the GOAT Michael Jordan! As his jerseys are not available in Swingman version.

How to spot a fake:

There are now hundreds of fake NBA products flooding the market, to keep yourself safe from counterfeit goods always buy from a reputable dealer such as:

NBAStore Europe

Pro Direct Basketball

To help you spot fakes please see our details shots below of all the labels that should be present on Nike and Mitchell and Ness Swingman jerseys.

New City Edition uniforms

Los Angeles Lakers

The reigning champs don't do City Edition jerseys, instead calling their fourth edition the Lore Series. Each jersey in the series so far has paid homage to a Lakers legend. Following Kobe Bryant , Magic Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal , Elgin Baylor is up this year, with a jersey that borrows design elements from the ones he wore in the early 1960s after the Lakers moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles.

Cleveland's deep musical roots -- including being home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame -- are on display in the Cavs' new City look. After the classic team "C," the mixed font is a tribute to logos and graphics from Hall of Fame bands, including Metallica, Pink Floyd and Nirvana. Above the tag, it reads "Long live rock."

Sporting the signature blue color from the city's flag, the team will also wear "H-Town" across the chest of the jersey.

The Heat are sending off their popular "Vice" jerseys in style, with a uniform they are calling "ViceVersa:" a pink-to-blue gradient with black lettering and trim.

Indiana Pacers

Since joining the NBA in 1976-77, the Pacers have made a single trip to the NBA Finals: in 2000, wearing pinstripe jerseys. The stripes are back on this year's City jerseys, with a waistband logo that was inspired by the Indiana state flag.

LA Clippers

Last season, the Clippers introduced a City jersey that became known by fans as the "San Andreas" look, because of the Old English font's resemblance to the logo for the video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." This year the Clippers are bringing back the same look with the colors flipped, as black now serves as the primary color for the jerseys.

Milwaukee Bucks

"Great Lakes Blue" has been a secondary color for the Bucks since 2015, but this is the first year it will be the primary color on one of the team's jerseys, with a look inspired the meaning of the city's name, "the gathering place by the water."

Memphis Grizzlies

Grit and Grind transforms into Memphis Soul for the Grizzlies, as their City Edition uniforms will celebrate the life of singer/songwriter Isaac Hayes and the legacy of Stax Records. The uniforms will feature a black base with vertical stripes, which represent the grooves on Stax's vinyl records. Gold and turquoise trim finishes the look, inspired by Hayes' 1972 Cadillac Eldorado (which is displayed at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis). Hayes' signature sunglasses and a Stax logo are also part of the design.

The Jazz are going #DarkMode for the 2020-21 season as their City Edition uniforms are the evolution of the gradient, red-rock theme from last season's City Edition uniform. Utah will also have a court to match the new uniforms, highlighted by the painted area in the key matching the color bands on the uniform.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics have 17 championship banners hanging from the rafters at TD Garden, and now they'll have five on the court as well. The team's new City Edition jerseys are inspired by the design of Boston's championship banners, with the "Boston Celtics" wordmark appearing above the number.

The Thunder released the latest City Edition uniform on Oklahoma Statehood Day and for good reason: the jersey bears the state's name for the first time and is a tribute to the 46th state. The colors were inspired by Oklahoma's sunsets.

While the color scheme was previously used on warm-ups and in the team's logo, this is the first time in Spurs history it will appear in the on-court jersey and shorts -- which, despite what the Coyote says, are not optional for players.

New Orleans Pelicans

The Pelicans' new City Edition look is a tribute to the flag of New Orleans, with a red, white and blue color scheme and three gold fleur-de-lis across the chest and another on the waistband.

Black is back in Phoenix as the Suns took design cues from Deandre Ayton and Kelly Oubre Jr . for their City Edition "The Valley" uniforms for 2020-21.

The jersey features a pixelated desert sunset that also forms the broad outline of Camelback Mountain, a fixture on the landscape of the greater Phoenix area.

Charlotte Hornets

The "Oakland Forever" jerseys are inspired by the franchise's look from 1997 to 2010, as the uniforms became iconic after the Warriors upset the No. 1 seed Dallas Mavericks in six games in 2007.

Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta partnered with the estate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the NBA, the National Basketball Players Association and Nike on the release of its 2020-21 MLK Nike City Edition uniform .

The black, old gold and white colorway is a nod to King's membership in the first Black Greek-letter fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha.

Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers unveiled their City Edition design, which pays homage to the team's home state of Oregon. According to the team, "the uniform celebrates the unique beauty of Oregon's landscape as well as acknowledging and honoring the tribal nations throughout what is now considered Oregon who have called this land their home from the beginning."

The 2022-23 NBA season might still be a ways off, but that doesn't mean we can't start mentally preparing by feasting our eyes upon some swoon-worthy new threads.

First introduced in 2016, the City Edition jerseys are updated each year. While some teams have stuck with the same design for multiple seasons, others continually switch it up. Or, if you're the Utah Jazz , you do a little bit of both. At least one team (s/o Washington Wizards ) coordinated with its MLB counterpart on the aesthetic.

In addition to the much-ballyhooed City Edition looks, some teams, such as the San Antonio Spurs , are throwing it back next season. Cue the Classic Edition jerseys, which pay homage to the franchise's origins.

Here is a look at the latest uniform updates as they're released by the teams.

Dame the designer

For the Portland Trail Blazers ' Statement Edition uniforms, Damian Lillard became the art director to design the uniform. The six-time NBA All-Star used the theme of "teamwork" for his design. For the first time ever, the Trail Blazers' "pinwheel" logo will feature prominently on the front of the jersey.

San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio released its fifth uniform for the 2022-23 season with its Statement Edition combination.

The jersey features a new "SATX" wordmark and a Texas outline containing the Spurs' logo is displayed on the shorts. Modern patterns inspired by traditional Mexican serapes and saddle blankets run down the sides of the uniform.

"Our new Statement Edition uniform embodies the evolution of our team's roots while celebrating fans across the entire region," said Becky Kimbro, VP of brand engagement for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. "Through the intricate serape pattern, we're blending our 50-year legacy with our vibrant culture that we celebrate on and off the court."

Detroit Pistons

The Pistons are bringing back the teal era in the 2022-23 season with their "Classic Edition" uniforms. Detroit wore a seemingly identical combination from 1996 to 2001.

The uniform's primary color is teal, and a horse with a multicolored flame as a mane is prominently displayed on the jersey. Detroit announced the news with a video featuring several tweets from fans who called for the design's return.

The clean design in Cleveland

The Cleveland Cavaliers might have an advantage in the uniform game. In 2020, the team hired artist Daniel Arsham as creative director. Arsham is a contemporary artist who works as a sculptor and designer. He helped redesign the team's uniforms and lettering.

Washington Wizards

For the Wiz Kids, it's all about the cherry blossoms. The Wizards unveiled their tribute to the iconic flowers of the nation's capital back in March but won't debut their pink alternate uniforms until the 2022-23 season.

The team's MLB counterpart, the Washington Nationals , revealed a similar City Edition uniform set, as the franchises collaborated to create a unified alternative look across sports. The Nike collaboration marks the first uniform campaign between MLB and NBA teams from the same market.

Hopefully the cherry blossom look bodes better for the Wizards -- as of Monday, the Nationals were in last place in the NL East (30-58).

Keeping it classic

The Spurs are going back to the beginning. In recent years, the Spurs' City Edition jerseys had featured a camouflage pattern and, most recently, a white canvas with the iconic "fiesta stripe" on the sides based on the team's popular warm-ups from the 1990s.

Now, in honor of San Antonio's 50th season, the team is rolling out Classic Edition uniforms that pay homage to the team's storied legacy. The look, made popular by Spurs legend George Gervin, features "San Antonio" across a black-on-black jersey chest.

"The Spurs Classic Edition uniform is a symbolic way for us to honor our legacy, players and loyalty to the city of San Antonio while giving our fans what they've been asking for -- we hear you," said Becky Kimbro , VP of brand engagement for Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

Old school meets new school

New uniforms but make it '90s. The Jazz are switching things up while simultaneously throwing things back. Utah revealed its primary colors for next season will be black, yellow and white. But the team also announced three purple jerseys , two of which won't be worn until 2023-24.

The Jazz enlisted the help of a video to tease its new purple mountain uniform set coming back for the 2022-23 season. Utah also teased a new purple mountain uniform for the following year, along with a classic jersey reminiscent of the original Jazz jersey design from when the team first moved to Utah from New Orleans.

NBA Jersey Number Rules: Positions & Numbers

Basketball is a sport famous for its iconic jerseys and unique numbers. From #23 worn by the legendary Michael Jordan to the iconic #8 and #24 of the prodigy himself, Kobe Bryant. These uniform numbers hold great significance for players and fans alike. Don't worry, we know the basketball sneakers are just as famous! Are you team Adidas or Nike?

But have you ever wondered how jersey numbers are chosen? Do they mean anything beyond just a number on a player's back? Are these numbers just randomly chosen digits for each NBA player? We're huge basketball fans, and we have the answers for you! In this article, we will explore the NBA jersey number rules, positions associated with specific numbers, and the cultural significance behind it all.

NBA sports

NBA jerseys are like a canvas for players to paint a part of their stories. Jersey numbers are often chosen based on personal significance, team traditions, or the player's position. Some players opt for numbers that have familial or cultural importance, while others simply adhere to team or league guidelines.

Do jersey numbers mean anything?

Your jersey number is more than just a digit. Jersey numbers in basketball can have various meanings attached to them. Sometimes, players choose a number representing their birthdate or age (like Penny Hardaway's #1 or Kevin Garnett's former #21). Other times, it could be a tribute to a family member or mentor who influenced their lives.

LeBron James initially wore #23 as a tribute to his childhood idol - Michael Jordan. However, he later changed it to #6 when he joined the Miami Heat because that was the number he wore during his Olympic appearances. Honestly, he's a 4-time NBA MVP - it doesn't matter what number he wears he's loved by all!

How do I choose a jersey number?

Choosing your jersey number is an exciting decision at any level - whether you're a novice playing basketball in school or have taken your skills to a court outside of the schoolyard. So, how should you go about selecting your jersey number?

First you'll want to consider if your team or organisation imposes any restrictions regarding available numbers. Some teams may have certain digits reserved for specific positions or have retired numbers or jerseys. Ask your coach or team manager, they should have a list.

Also, whether you're the superstitious type or not, some organisations adhere to superstitions surrounding "unlucky" numbers like 13.

Secondly, think about what resonates with you as a basketball player wearing the same number for at least a whole season. Is there a particular athlete whose style or achievements inspire you? Consider wearing their number as an homage. Alternatively, if there is a significant date or favourite number associated with you, that could also be a great choice.

Last but never least, take into account the power of symbolism. A number may represent determination, strength, or success to you personally. Wearing that number on your jersey can serve as a reminder of the qualities you strive to embody on the court.

Here's a fun fact, in ancient Greece the numbers #11, #22 and #33 are revered as master numbers that command extra strength.

Cultural Significance of Numbers

Numbers hold deep cultural significance in various parts of the world. In Chinese culture, for example, certain digits are considered lucky or unlucky based on pronunciation and their association with positive or negative traits. This cultural influence can be seen even in NBA players' choices for their jersey numbers.

One prime example is Yao Ming, who wore #11 throughout his career. The number is considered lucky in China because "1" sounds like "prosper" in Mandarin. Yao Ming's choice reflected his identity as a proud Chinese athlete and resonated with fans who held onto their own cultural beliefs surrounding lucky numbers.

On the other hand, other numbers like #4 in China is considered extremely unlucky as it has a close resemblance to the word "death". Did you know that Chinese buildings often forgo a level 4? True story.

Now that we have explored the cultural significance and personal meaning behind jersey numbers in basketball, let's take a closer look at the official NBA jersey number rules and the positions associated with specific numbers.

What Are The NBA Jersey Number Rules?

The NBA has specific guidelines regarding jersey numbers to ensure consistency and clarity during games. Here are some of the key rules:

  • Numbers 0 and 00 : These are both valid jersey numbers in the NBA. Players like Damian Lillard (#0) and Russell Westbrook (#0) have made these numbers iconic in recent years.
  • Numbers 1-5 : Traditionally, these numbers are reserved for guards or players who primarily handle the ball. Think of point guards like Chris Paul (#3) or shooting guards like James Harden (#13).
  • Numbers 6-10 : These numbers are typically worn by small forwards or swingmen who can play multiple positions. LeBron James famously donned #6 with the Miami Heat before returning to his #23 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
  • Numbers 11-15 : Power forwards often choose from this range of jersey numbers, showcasing their versatility on both ends of the court.
  • Numbers 16-20 : These numbers are primarily worn by centres, who anchor the defence and control the paint. Former NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal (#32) and Hakeem Olajuwon (#34) embraced these digits throughout their careers.

Why is #6 banned in NBA?

Have you noticed the #6 missing from the court? Or heard that players such as Alex Caruso and LeBron James have "retired" their #6 jerseys? That's because the #6 has been permanently retired across the whole NBA in honour of former Boston Celtics player Bill Russell.

Russell's contributions to basketball went beyond his impressive skills on the court, as he was an influential civil rights activist during a time of racial tension in America.

To pay tribute to his legacy as a player and leader off the court, the NBA retired the number #6 throughout the league in 2022. It serves as a reminder of Russell's impact on and off the basketball court.

What Jersey Numbers Are Not Allowed In Basketball?

While most numbers are fair game in choosing a jersey number, there are a few exceptions. The NBA prohibits players from wearing certain numbers for various reasons. For example:

  • Numbers 69 and above : Players cannot wear numbers #69 and above due to potential concerns over inappropriate or offensive associations.
  • Number 0 combined with any other digit : To avoid confusion, players cannot wear numbers like 04 or 09, where zero is used alongside another digit.
  • Number 6: Wearing the #6 is no longer sanctioned across the NBA. More on this below!

Does The NBA Allow Three-Digit Numbers?

No, the NBA does not allow three-digit numbers on jerseys. This rule aims to maintain clarity on the court and prevent any confusion during play. Remembering double digits is hard enough, why add three to the table!?

jersey numbers in the NBA

While we have primarily focused on the NBA jersey number rules and their significance, it's important to note that basketball is a global sport with different leagues and organisations worldwide. In fact, basketball is in the top 10 most popular sports worldwide!

These leagues often have their own unique rules and practices when it comes to jersey numbers. Let's explore some examples:

International Basketball Federation (FIBA)

FIBA governs international basketball competitions, including the Olympic Games and FIBA World Cup. While FIBA generally follows similar guidelines to the NBA regarding eligibility for jersey numbers, there are a few differences. For example:

  • In FIBA competitions, players can typically choose any number between 4 and 15, excluding 6, which is reserved for team captains.
  • Some countries also have their own specific conventions or traditions when it comes to assigning jersey numbers. For instance, in Spain's ACB League, it is customary for players in certain positions (such as centres) to wear single-digit numbers.

College Basketball

College basketball has its own set of rules regarding jersey numbers. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) oversees college sports in the United States and sets guidelines for jersey numbering practices. Here are a few key points:

  • NCAA rule states that jerseys must be numbered from 0 to 5 using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.) or Roman numerals (I, II, III).
  • There are certain restrictions based on positions: guards usually wear #0 or #1; forwards may wear #2 through #4; centres typically wear higher numbers (#45 being commonly used).
  • Unlike professional basketball leagues such as the NBA, where retiring jerseys is quite common among teams with legendary players, colleges usually reserve retirements for exceptional circumstances.

European Leagues

Basketball leagues across Europe also have their own unique practices when it comes to jersey numbers. In some cases, the traditions and conventions vary from country to country or even from team to team. Here are a few noteworthy examples:

  • In the Spanish ACB League, jersey numbers may carry additional significance beyond player preferences. For instance, certain teams reserve specific numbers for iconic players or positions.
  • In Italy's Serie A, jersey numbers often follow positional conventions similar to those in the NBA. For example, guards typically wear lower numbers (such as #1 or #5), while forwards and centres may wear higher digits (#7 or #15).

college basketball jersey numbers

In basketball, players have the freedom to choose their jersey numbers and the option to change them. Let's explore the NBA jersey number change rules and why teams sometimes retire certain numbers.

When A Number Can't Be Used

There are instances when a player on a team cannot use a specific, uniform number again. This typically occurs when a team decides to retire a player's number as a way to honour their contributions and impact on the franchise.

For example, after his sudden passing in January 2020, the Los Angeles Lakers retired both #8 and #24 in honour of one of the best players in the league, Kobe Bryant.

How often can NBA players change their numbers during the season?

According to league rules, players must apply for approval from the league office and their respective teams before switching.

Typically, players must wait until an offseason or an extended period without games before changing their numbers. This allows sufficient time for merchandise production and updates across various platforms. It also allows time for us fans to get our merchandise sorted for our favourite players!

Special exemptions for jersey number changes

In some cases, exceptions may be granted for immediate changes following significant events or circumstances. For example:

  • When LeBron James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers after his stint with Miami Heat, he was given special permission to switch back from #6 (which he wore with Miami) to his previous #23.
  • Following Kobe Bryant's tragic passing, multiple players requested permission from the league to change their current jerseys to one of Kobe's iconic numbers (#8 or #24) as a tribute.

Why Do NBA Teams Retire Jersey Numbers?

Retiring a jersey number is the highest honour a team can bestow upon one of its players. It signifies that the player's contributions and impact were so significant that no other player on that team will ever wear the same number again.

Teams usually retire numbers to pay homage to famous players who have made an indelible mark on the franchise. These players often achieve extraordinary success, win championships, set records, and embody the values and spirit of the organisation.

Michael Jordan NBA number 23 jersey

Certain jersey numbers have attained legendary status due to iconic performances or associations with great players. Here are a few notable examples:

  • #23 : Michael Jordan
  • #33 : Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
  • #32 : Magic Johnson
  • #6 : Bill Russell
  • #99 : Wayne Gretzky (although primarily associated with hockey, it holds distinction across sports)

Basketball jerseys have come a long way since the sport's early days. From simple tank tops and singlets to elaborate designs, the evolution of basketball jerseys reflects changes in fashion, technology, and cultural trends. Let's look at how these jerseys have transformed over time.

Early Beginnings

In the early 1900s, basketball jerseys were functional yet basic. They consisted of sleeveless, woollen tank tops that allowed freedom of movement on the court. These jerseys often featured solid colours or simple patterns and were usually made from materials readily available at the time.

Introduction of Team Logos and Names

As basketball gained popularity, teams began incorporating their logos and names onto their jerseys. This helped establish team identities and create a stronger sense of belonging among players and fans.

Logos would typically appear on the front of the jersey, while team names were sometimes added to the back.

Colourful Designs and Sleeve Additions

In the 1970s, basketball uniforms started to become more colourful and vibrant. Bold designs featuring stripes, geometric patterns, and contrasting colours became common. Some teams also experimented with adding sleeves to their jerseys during this period. However, this trend didn't endure in mainstream basketball but resurfaced years later in alternative styles.

Advent of Performance Fabrics

The introduction of performance fabrics revolutionised basketball jerseys in terms of breathability, moisture-wicking capabilities, and overall comfort for players.

Synthetic materials like polyester became popular due to their ability to withstand intense physical activity while keeping players dry.

Additionally, advancements in sublimation printing allowed for intricate designs and detailed graphics that would not fade or peel over time.

Alternative Jerseys and Special Editions

Over time, teams introduced alternative jerseys to create hype and engage fans.

These special edition jerseys often featured unique designs, colours, or retro-inspired aesthetics that paid homage to the team's history.

Fans eagerly anticipated these releases and frequently showed their support by purchasing and wearing these limited-edition jerseys.

Collaborations with Fashion Brands

In recent years, professional basketball teams have collaborated with fashion brands to create special jersey collections that blend sports and style.

This crossover has resulted in eye-catching and unconventional designs that challenge traditional jersey aesthetics.

The Rise of Throwback Jerseys

two throwback jerseys of the lakers and bulls

Throwback jerseys have gained tremendous popularity among basketball enthusiasts. These jerseys pay tribute to legendary players, historic teams, famous numbers, or specific eras in basketball history.

Basketball jerseys have evolved from simple tank tops into complex designs incorporating team logos, performance fabrics, and unique aesthetics. As the sport continues to grow globally, we can expect further innovations in jersey design that reflect changing tastes and styles.

Final Thoughts

Jersey numbers are more than just decoration on a basketball player's uniform; they carry personal meaning, cultural significance, and tell stories of greatness. Like a badge of honour.

From choosing a number that resonates with your aspirations to understanding the rules governing jersey selection in professional basketball leagues like the NBA - each digit has its own tale.

What Are The NBA Jersey Number Rules? Full Guide

Have you ever wondered why there aren’t any NBA players wearing a number 69 jersey?

Or why certain players use specific numbers?

There can be a lot of reasons for this and there are also rules that they must follow. So, let’s quickly find out what this is all about.

Table of Contents

What are Jersey Numbers?

In most sports including, there are numbers etched on the jerseys of players.

The numbers in jerseys are used to identify players especially when there are fouls and violations.

For instance, a foul was called on a player. The referee may signal to the scorekeeper the player who fouled using his jersey number. This also makes it easier for the scorekeeper to identify who committed the foul.

Just imagine the confusion if no player wears a number. The referees and the scorekeepers may have to guess or even ask the players who fouled.

But what about the last names on the back of the jerseys?

While most leagues also have names on the jerseys, they’re mostly there for the fans. Scorekeepers don’t have time to write down the names of the players especially if they’re long. Instead, they use their jersey numbers.

What are the NBA Jersey Number Rules?

Most basketball leagues have different rules regarding their jersey numbers. The NBA also has specific rules that players must obey.

Here are they:

  • Players can select from 0-99 as their jersey number
  • No player on a team shall have the same jersey numbers
  • Players can ask to change their jersey number during the off-season and the league will decide if it’s approved or not
  • Retired jersey numbers can’t be used anymore unless a player asks for permission
  • Unofficially, the number 69 is banned in the NBA

In basketball, jersey numbers don’t indicate the position you’re playing in. They’re mostly just for identification.

Also, although there’s no official NBA rule that prohibits the use of “69” on jerseys, the NBA once denied the request of Dennis Rodman to use that. They felt that it was too obscene especially for a popular player like him to use.

Lastly, a team may retire a jersey number in honor of that player. But a new player can always ask for permission to use that retired player. But no players usually do this since it wouldn’t be respectful.

What are the Most Common and Rare NBA Numbers?

Throughout the years, some players may change their jersey numbers while some will be loyal to theirs.

So, you might wonder, what are the most common NBA jerseys and what are the rarest ones?

So, for the 2021-22 NBA season , here are the most popular jersey digits by the number of players using them.

As we can see from the list above and the usual trend for each season is that single digit numbers are the most popular.

The most used numbers tend to be 0-50 while anything above that is rarely used.

But probably the most iconic and popular jersey number in history is #23. It was worn by some of the greatest in basketball such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis.

Why do NBA players wear different numbers in the Olympics?

Once every four years, a lot of NBA players will play in the Olympics to represent their nations.

But you may have noticed that NBA players usually won’t use their own jersey numbers in the Olympics. Is there a reason for that?

Yes, there is because as per FIBA and Team USA rules, players can only use jersey numbers starting from 4 to 15.

We don’t know the exact reason for this rule since other countries allow higher numbers. For instance, Ricky Rubio plays for Spain, and he has donned the number 79 at one time.

Why are Jersey Numbers Important in Basketball?

The official reason for basketball jersey numbers is for identification. But over the years, they’ve become more than just digits for most players.

A lot of players choose their numbers carefully as they hold significant meanings. As such, there are many reasons why players choose their numbers. They could be:

  • The player’s favorite number
  • To honor their favorite basketball player
  • As a tribute to their family
  • To represent their faith and beliefs

Most NBA players choose their numbers as a respect to someone dear to them. For instance, Stephen Curry wears #30 because that’s the number that his dad Dell Curry wore.

There’s also Gilbert Arenas who wore #0 because that’s the number of minutes that experts predicted he would play in the NBA.

Then, there are also players who just wants to have fun such as Dennis Rodman who tried to use #69 but got denied. Instead, he used the #70 when he played for Dallas Mavericks.

Jersey numbers in basketball exist officially for identification. But for players and fans, they became symbols of greatness.

To most, jersey numbers are more than just digits. They represent different meanings and memories.

NBA draws inspiration from team uniforms for In-Season Tournament courts

NBA draws inspiration from team uniforms for In-Season Tournament courts

The NBA is leaning into change this season as it rolls out its new In-Season Tournament, and nothing might be as visible as the courts teams will play on during the tournament games themselves.

On Monday, the league unveiled the home court each team will play on during the In-Season Tournament (Reminder: Games will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays in November.) Each court will be a departure from the regular design at each arena. For five teams — Boston Celtics , Los Angeles Lakers , Chicago Bulls , Portland Trail Blazers and New Orleans Pelicans — it will be the first time they have had an alternative court design. It is all part of the league’s intention to sport a whole new aesthetic for the tournament, with teams playing in City Edition jerseys, wearing new shooting shirts and even new magnets on the ball racks.

NBA DEBUTS IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT COURTS FOR ALL 30 TEAMS pic.twitter.com/OHmOA8LYGL — NBA (@NBA) October 30, 2023

“We understand that we’re all iterating and trying to figure out what are the best ways we can elevate this from the regular season so that people understand how important this is,” said Christopher Arena, the NBA’s head of on-court and brand partnerships.

This will be the first time every court across the league will have the same theme. Each will take its color scheme inspiration from the team’s uniforms and highlight one color for the body of the court and apron. There will be a 16-foot lane from end to end that Arena says is supposed to signify a runway to Las Vegas, the site of the tournament’s semifinals and finals. It also will be the first time the courts are completely painted, without any wood seen. The boundary lines between the court and out of bounds will be expanded from two inches to four inches wide, to help the referees and players distinguish out of bounds — a league rule in place in cases where the body and apron of a court are the same color.

The courts were designed on an accelerated timetable, with the NBA sourcing 30 new courts it could sand, paint and refinish, then working with its three authorized court manufacturers and 10 suppliers to get them done in time for November. Most have already been delivered to the teams.

“This isn’t normal,” Arena said. “It is not within the timelines of court manufacturing to take on 30 courts and redesign them and paint them and get them to team facilities within the span of three or four months.”

The courts are noticeably louder and more brash than the usual designs. The league stayed away from very dark colors and white because of how they would present on television but otherwise leaned into more colorful designs.

“The game of basketball, you always have this wood court,” Arena said. “There have been some teams and universities and colleges that probably more than any have pushed the limits a little bit. I think the Oregon court is a really good example with all the trees and the forest. A few other floors have done a lot with stains, to show skylines and things of that nature. And I think for the most part, our aesthetic direction of the courts as a league has been to treat it as a stage, certainly, but allow the focus of the game to be the game. To be the players and these dynamic athletes who can do incredible things in the air, in speed, with a ball. And so we’ve never really wanted to distract from that in any way. And we’ve got these historic uniforms that these teams playing. We’ve just introduced the City Edition uniforms as an architecture to really celebrate these hyperlocal stories. And so, we think we do that. We think for the bulk of our season we are reinforcing that.

“But to take 60 games out of that season, and to put the focus on the stage and to really have something from a broadcast standpoint, whether you’re watching on your phone, your iPad or whatever medium you have, to have something that really forces you to stop and look and focus, we think that was the right thing to do for this tournament.”

The courts, like the tournament itself, will be one of many first impressions the league hopes to nail when the In-Season Tournament tips off with group play Nov. 3.

BASKETBALL fans are convinced that Gradey Dick and Anthony Black knew what they were doing with their jersey swap.

The Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic stars exchanged shirts at the end of Sunday's NBA clash, making for a moment that had fans in tears.

Gradey Dick (left) and Anthony Black (right) swapped jerseys Sunday night

Both did so with a wry smile on their face - which left basketball fans adamant they knew exactly what they were doing.

Dick and Black held the names on their jerseys up for photographers to capture.

And the clip quickly went viral on social media with fans rushing to comment.

"They understood the assignment," one said.

A clip of the pair talking before the jersey swap also circulated on social media.

It even showed Black moving positions, possibly to make sure the message read right.

The pair are both rookies in the league with their stars on the rise.

Dick, 20, was drafted No. 13 overall by the Toronto Raptors out of Wichita, Kansas.

He spent a period at the G-League affiliate Raptors 905 before the turn of the year.

Grady comes from a sporting background after his mom Carmen also played college basketball at Iowa State.

Black, meanwhile, was the No. 6 overall pick last year out of Arkansas.

The 20-year-old was a five-star recruit and already showed flashes of his talent during his young Magic career.

Lakers News: Austin Reaves Does Jersey Swap With Former Dodgers Power-Hitter

  • Author: James Brizuela

In this story:

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have the benefit of sharing the same city as one of the best teams in the MLB: the Los Angeles Dodgers. There are often moments when players from  both teams cross paths , and that is exactly what happened.

Current Lakers star Austin Reaves walked over to the legendary MLB and former Dodger Albert Pujols and engaged in a jersey swap.

Jersey swapping is very popular in professional sports, and it's an act of showing respect to the game of a fellow opponent and teammate. However, it's not often that an MLB and NBA star engages in a jersey swap.

Pujols spent the majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels before he ended up playing for the Dodgers. Pujols played a staggering 22 seasons before he hung up his cleats.

Reaves is only in his second season and has been garnering plenty of praise from the NBA world. It appears his star has only risen, and legends from the MLB world like Pujols wanted to honor Reaves by asking him for a jersey swap.

The above video showcases Pujos and Reaves smiling for pictures, but we imagine it might have been a surreal moment for Reaves to have been asked to jersey swap with a player like Pujols.

James Harden tried to block teammate Kawhi Leonard’s shot in ultimate NBA brain fart

Share All sharing options for: James Harden tried to block teammate Kawhi Leonard’s shot in ultimate NBA brain fart

Throughout his career, Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden has never been known for his defense. Often remembered more for his defensive lapses than his lockdown play on opposing defenders, Harden never took the star defensive assignment, opting to chill in the wings while guys like PJ Tucker or Trevor Ariza did most of the defending.

That all changed Wednesday, as Harden finally took the challenge of defending the toughest offensive player on the court ... his Clippers teammate Kawhi Leonard. After passing the ball to Leonard in the corner for an open three-pointer, Harden suddenly started closing out on the open shooter and appeared to go for the block.

Did he forget what team he was on? How does this happen?? Watch the play here:

I’m not kidding when I tell you James Harden contesting HIS OWN TEAMMATES SHOT is funniest thing I’ve ever seen happen on a basketball court pic.twitter.com/HINDl01Ivi — Oluwajomiloju (@JomiAdeniran) March 21, 2024

I just wanna know what behooves a player to randomly close out on your own teammate like a practice drill in the middle of the third quarter. Leonard missed the shot too, so it could be a plus for Harden’s Defensive Player of the Year campaign. He was the best defender for the Blazers, that has to count for something.

This is only the type of thing that you can do when your team is up by a lot with nothing to worry about... ( glances at their opponent and score ) oh. Well, that’s fair.
