In recent years, there has been growing concern about artificial intelligence's impact on the future of work. While some argue that AI will lead to job losses and increased inequality, others believe it can enhance productivity and create new opportunities. Gen Z individuals, born after 1996, are better positioned than anyone else to understand the impact of AI on the workplace and show us how to be more productive.

Positive and negative aspects of using ChatGPT in the workplace

The EduBirdie study sheds light on how Generation Z views AI in the workplace, and its findings are both positive and negative. The study surveyed 2,000 Gen Z individuals in the US to determine how they used ChatGPT, an AI-powered language model, in their workplace.

On the one hand, it shows that Gen Z is embracing AI technology to aid them in their work tasks. On the other hand, it reveals that many Gen Z individuals are struggling with the guilt and dependency associated with its use.

The study revealed that 36% of Gen Z respondents felt guilty about using AI to aid them in their work tasks. Additionally, 1 in 3 Gen Z respondents expressed concern about relying too heavily on ChatGPT, as they believed it could limit their critical thinking skills. Furthermore, 18% of respondents stated that it hampered their creativity.

One possible explanation for the mixed reactions to AI is that Gen Z individuals are more aware of the potential consequences of its use than previous generations. They have grown up in an era of rapid technological change, and are more likely to be familiar with AI's ethical and social implications. This may explain why they feel a sense of responsibility and guilt when they rely too heavily on AI in their work tasks.

Another factor that could be contributing to the mixed reactions to AI is the lack of education and training. The study also revealed that 20% of Gen Z respondents encountered difficulties while using AI in their workplace, with 2% even being dismissed for using ChatGPT.

This highlights the need for better education and training on the proper and effective use of AI in the workplace.

How Generation Z is using AI

Despite the challenges associated with AI, there are also many benefits. The study shows that almost half of Gen Z respondents agreed that AI made them more creative, and 1 in 7 reported an increase in earnings. This suggests that AI has the potential to enhance productivity and create new opportunities, particularly in fields that require creativity and innovation.

Can ChatGPT replace you?

According to a recent survey, Generation Z is not very concerned about AI replacing them in the workplace this year, with only 9% believing it to be a likely possibility by 2024. However, 61% of respondents think AI could take over their jobs in 10 years. Programmers, in particular, use AI to write code for them, so they are wondering if they could be easily replaced by AI, but it's worth noting that although AI-powered assistants like ChatGPT have a vast amount of domain-specific knowledge to write code, they lack the deep experience and expertise needed to solve very specific or complex problems.

AI is here to stay and has the potential to significantly shape the future of work. As AI continues to evolve, we must strike a balance between using it to our advantage and ensuring that we don't become too reliant on it. With the right education and training, we can harness the power of AI to enhance productivity, creativity, and innovation in the workplace.

While the prize money for this year’s IPL has not been confirmed by organisers, and if previous years are anything to go by, the IPL purse this time around is expected to be around $6m, with the winning team collecting approximately $2.4m.

1. Can Virat Kohli finally capture the one major title that has eluded him?

Virat Kohli is a player who has won just about everything there is to win in world cricket — except an IPL title.

The Indian batsman has played in all 16 IPL seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore, agonisingly finishing tournament runners-up in 2009, 2011 and 2016. He is the all-time leading run-scorer in IPL history.

With Kohli skipping the recent home series against England for personal reasons, some believe the clock is also ticking on the 35-year-old’s IPL career — could 2024 be the iconic batsman’s final season?

This year’s event represents one of the best opportunities for Kohli to win the IPL. He is joined in the 2024 Bangalore squad by the formidable Aussie talents of Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, South African captain Faf du Plessis and fast-bowling Indian teammate Mohammed Siraj.

An IPL crown for Kohli would be a perfect final chapter to the career of one the greatest cricket players ever.

2. Will Mitchell Starc live up to that record contract?

Aussie quick Mitchell Starc made headlines last December when he obliterated the IPL auction record , becoming the most expensive player purchase of all time at $2.98m.

Starc, 34, was auctioned off to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the centrepiece of their 2024 IPL season campaign. The left-arm paceman averages an impressive 23 for his bowling career in T20s with 74 wickets in 60 T20 internationals.

But the left-arm paceman last played in the IPL in 2015 and has a long, injury-riddled history with the competition.

He missed the tournament in 2016 because of a foot fracture. In 2018, Starc signed for the Kolkata for big money – but was injured again and never played for the team. In 2022, he also pulled out, citing “[COVID-19] bubble fatigue”.

In 2024, Kolkata will be hoping that Starc can deliver them their first IPL title in 10 years. If the big Australian stays healthy, few bowlers in world cricket can statistically impact a contest more than Starc.

3. Why is the Indian election delaying the full schedule launch of IPL 2024?

The nearly two-month-long tournament will begin on Friday, March 22. Last month, organisers only announced a partial schedule for the first 21 fixtures until April 7 as the dates of India’s upcoming general election had not been announced at the time.

Issues related to the management, adequate policing and security of the tournament whilst the country goes to polls are understood to be behind the curtailed schedule announcement.

The  election schedule was announced last week, with the polls running from April 19 to June 4, and IPL organisers are expected to release the dates of the remaining fixtures in the next few days.

After the election, it is expected that organisers will have to play catch-up on the IPL tournament schedule with possible three-a-day matches slated on some days.

It is anticipated the IPL will finish in late May, which places it very close to the adjacent ICC T20 World Cup that begins on 1 June in the USA and West Indies.

4. Can 42-year-old MS Dhoni defy Father Time (again) to deliver Chennai a repeat title?

No player has the Midas touch at the IPL quite like MS Dhoni.

The evergreen Indian wicketkeeper-batsman has won the tournament a record five times in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Rumours are circulating that the 2024 IPL will be his final go-around in the lucrative competition — but we have heard those rumours before. Incredibly, Dhoni has not played a single professional game since the Super Kings defeated the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final 10 months ago.

If Dhoni is to bring Chennai another title this year, he will certainly have a strong arsenal of players to do it: Ravindra Jadeja, Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali headline an impressively credentialed Super Kings outfit.

If Dhoni does clinch a sixth IPL title, it will add to the already remarkable legacy of a player who has experienced an unprecedented second cricketing career peak as an IPL winner, to go along with his hugely successful Indian international career that ended in 2017.

If this is indeed his career farewell, Dhoni —one of India’s all-time favourite cricketers — can expect incredible support throughout the country during the IPL.

As a leader at the education nonprofit Khan Academy, I was thrilled when ChatGPT came out in November 2022. It meant we could use generative AI to provide personalized tutoring to more kids than ever.

But as a hiring manager and cofounder of a career development business who's trained first-gen students at CUNY and MBAs at Harvard Business School alike, I was heartbroken to see that so many job seekers were using these tools in exactly the wrong way. 

They forgot that no matter how exciting this new technology is, humans are still in charge of the hiring process. Which is why having a robot write your resume is a recipe for disaster.

But given that I wrote the literal book on using ChatGPT in your job search , I know you can still turn to AI to make your resume shine. Used properly, it can help you land the interview — and ultimately the job. 

The wrong way to use AI for your resume

In my experience, most job seekers using ChatGPT or other AI platforms begin with a prompt like "Generate a marketing resume." This might seem like a great place to start, but it's the biggest mistake you could make. Here's why: 

The results are massively generic 

Take this summary, for instance:

As a hiring manager, the first thing I'm always looking for is evidence of specific accomplishments. When I scan this, though, my first thought is "Wow — this candidate is great at buzzwords, but not so great at actual marketing." 

That's hardly the first impression you want to make when employers spend seven seconds , on average, reviewing your resume!

ChatGPT and other AI tools are going to make stuff up 

As if that wasn't bad enough, check out what comes next under a single job listing under the experience section:

Not only do these bullet points lack specificity (with no clear projects or outcomes), but the sheer range of skills covered is literally unbelievable. As in, I've never met a marketer in my two-decade career who did all of these things in one job.

So my human BS detector immediately assumes the worst: This isn't a resume, this is a hallucination!

The right way to use AI for your resume

OK, you get the picture: Having AI generate your resume from scratch can be a fast track to rejection. But if we know that human reviewers want specificity and credibility, we can actually leverage AI to help us with those exact things.

1. Start with a draft resume written by a human (i.e., you)

Instead of asking AI to generate your resume, start with your own first draft, even if it's in rough shape. That way, you can at least be specific and accurate about what you actually did, even if those accomplishments need a little polishing.

2. Identify and incorporate missing keywords

Go right to the source of truth. The job description was created by the hiring team to spell out the skills they're looking for — and it contains the exact keywords you want to match.

Here's where you turn to AI. Enter the following prompt: 

• Which keywords from the below job description are missing from my resume? 
• Here's the job description: [Paste the job description here] 
• And here's my resume: [Paste the text of your resume here]

Once you've got a list of missing keywords, identify the ones you have experience with and prompt the AI to help you incorporate them: 

Suggest three ways to incorporate [keyword] into my resume.

3. Quantify achievements and demonstrate results

The best predictor of future performance is usually past performance, which means recruiters and hiring managers want to see real results, not just hallucinations.

So get a little nudge in the right direction with a prompt like: 

Suggest three ways to add more quantitative impact to the following bullet point: [Paste your bullet point here]

Now, it's tempting to copy and paste the bullets your AI platform suggests straight into your resume. But make sure you're editing the text to match your actual accomplishments. For instance, maybe you generated $300,000 in donations, not $500,000 like the AI spit out, or your organization actually measures growth quarterly rather than monthly.

4. Review, review, review!

Always proofread your resume before submitting it. If you've used AI, it's all the more important to review every last word and number to make sure everything's 100% accurate. 

The last thing you want is to be sitting in a final-round interview and have your prospective boss's boss's boss ask you about a resume bullet the AI fabricated and you forgot to update!
