  • Stage two Bilya Wing completes $15 million redevelopment project at Australind SHS
  • New facilities provide additional contemporary teaching and learning areas with all-ability access
  • A free-standing artistic sculpture adds to the school’s sculpture trail and green space
  • Part of Cook Labor Government’s $1.5 billion public education infrastructure program

Education Minister Dr Tony Buti today officially opened the new $15 million facilities at Australind Senior High School, including the stage two Bilya Wing.

The wing is named Bilya after the Noongar word for river, as it overlooks the Brunswick River and adjacent wetlands of Pinjarup Country.

The new facilities include a two-storey classroom block consisting of 10 general classrooms, an art studio, STEM room, two science laboratories, inclusive life skills room, and a conference room with kitchen and toilets.

The building features Aboriginal art-themed furniture and has been designed for all-ability access, inclusive of a lift. The upstairs conference room is used as a Year 12 common room, where senior students can enjoy a dedicated space to meet with peers during breaks.

The two-stage redevelopment project has also provided a dental therapy centre, welding workshop, refurbished student services area, and a basketball court at Australind Senior High School, along with a resurfaced sports court at the adjacent Australind Primary School.

The removal of eight transportable classrooms has provided more green space for students, and a free-standing artistic sculpture based on the Fibonacci Sequence adds to the school’s sculpture trail.

The project is part of the Cook Labor Government’s significant $1.5 billion capital works program to build and improve public education facilities across Western Australia.

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“I am thrilled to officially open these contemporary education facilities for students and staff at Australind Senior High School.

“Investing in regional school facilities is essential to ensure every Western Australian student has access to a high-quality education, regardless of their location.

As stated by Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns:

“I am so proud to be delivering this for the Australind community.

“With this major upgrade, the students and staff at Australind Senior High School will have the modern facilities they need to learn, teach, and achieve at their very best.”

As stated by Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:

“It is very exciting to see this major upgrade now finished and serving our local community.

“The completion of this outstanding project is another example of the Cook Labor Government’s focus on ensuring students and families in the region have access to high quality education.”

Ageing WA public schools set for $500 million facelift as part of coronavirus recovery plan

A student sits at a desk in a classroom with her hand in the air.

More than 60 aging public schools across Western Australia will receive almost $500 million to upgrade facilities and cope with increased enrolments, the State Government has announced.

Key points:

  • The money will be spent on 46 schools in the Perth area and 17 in regional WA
  • Upgrades include new classrooms, ovals, halls and performing arts spaces
  • The work is part of the Government's COVID-19 economic recovery plan

One in two schools across WA are more than 50 years old, Education Minister Sue Ellery said, and some required a lot of work to be done.

She said some schools would also be targeted to increase capacity as facilities had not kept up with rising student numbers.

"There's a lot of work to be done in some of those older schools, but we also know we've got schools where there are enrolment pressures and we're adding extra classroom blocks or science areas," she said.

"It's important to make sure that those kids are learning in authentic learning environments."

Teenage students solve maths problems in workbooks.

Ms Ellery said funding would also be allocated where necessary to meet demand in areas where the population was growing.

Details of the projects already announced include new classrooms, sport ovals and halls and performing arts spaces.

The investment is the latest in a series of funding announcements made by the WA Government as part of its COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

Bid to solve 'long-term problems': Premier

The money will be spent over the next four years on 46 schools in the Perth area and 17 in regional WA .

Premier Mark McGowan said the investment was expected to create 1,850 jobs, with work set to begin this financial year.

Premier Mark McGowan stands wearing a suit listening to a student read from a piece of paper at Kewdale Primary School.

He said it was part of the Government's plan to create jobs while spending on long-term needs of the state.

"It's not just about creating jobs, but also about solving long-term problems and making sure that we are able to provide a first-class education, with outstanding buildings, to students in public schools all over Western Australia," he said.

"Older schools will be the big beneficiaries here. Those schools that might have been built in the 50s, 60s or 70s that need major refurbishments all over Western Australia are going to be the big beneficiaries."

List of targeted schools released

The Government released a list of some of the projects that would be undertaken:

  • Carine Senior High School — $32 million major upgrade to provide classrooms and facilities for up to 600 students
  • Albany Senior High School — $6.3 million for a new performing arts centre
  • Kalamunda Senior High School — $18.3 million rebuild of education support facilities and new classrooms

  • Karratha Senior High School — $22 million upgrade to provide new facilities to accommodate increasing enrolments
  • Joseph Banks Secondary College — $16 million new classroom building
  • Lesmurdie Primary School — $15.2 million to complete school rebuild
  • Australind Senior High School — $15 million upgrade to provide new double-storey classroom building, science and design and technology facilities

  • Pinjarra Senior High School — $10.4 million for a new performing arts centre and sports hall
  • Westminster Primary School — $10 million for school rebuild

School upgrades designed to boost industry

Mr McGowan said the investment was one of a number of measures taken to try and avoid widespread bankruptcies it was feared the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to.

"We're trying to focus much of what we do on capital works which fix longstanding problems and provide an investment pipeline for industry and also ensure there's a longstanding benefit," he said.

"We've got to get people back to work now. We've got to get a pipeline of investment now. We can't wait till later.

"With these projects, sometimes, it takes months to get tenders out there and get things underway, sometimes it could take years."

Master Builders WA executive director John Gelavis said the work would bolster confidence in the industry.

"The school upgrade package promises work for 1,850 brickies, electricians, plumbers and other tradies and apprentices," he said.

"Building work creates an economic multiplier effect which flows on to local businesses and the entire community."

President of the State Schools Teachers Union of WA (SSTUWA) Pat Byrne said teachers would be very happy with the announcement.

"For some of the schools that have been listed it's long overdue, and we're delighted to see a range of different projects that have been provided for, including creative arts centres, sports facilities, industrial design facilities," she said.

"These are issues that needed to be addressed for a very long time, we're very, very pleased that the Government has finally recognised the importance of that."

But Ms Byrne said it was vital funding was allocated to also ensure adequate staffing levels at schools in areas with growing populations.

New $15 million redevelopment project complete at Australind SHS

New $15 million redevelopment project complete at Australind SHS

The new $15 million facilities at Australind Senior High School — including the stage two Bilya Wing — is now open.

Named after the Noongar word for ‘river’, the new wing overlooks the Brunswick River and adjacent wetlands of Pinjarup Country.

The new facilities include a two-storey classroom block consisting of 10 general classrooms, an art studio, STEM room, two science laboratories, inclusive life skills room, and a conference room with kitchen and toilets.

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said with this major upgrade, the students and staff at Australind Senior High School will have the modern facilities necessary to learn, teach and achieve at their very best.

The building features Aboriginal art-themed furniture and has been designed for all-ability access, inclusive of a lift.

The upstairs conference room is used as a Year 12 common room, where senior students can enjoy a dedicated space to meet with peers during breaks.

The two-stage redevelopment project also provides a dental therapy centre, welding workshop, refurbished student services area, and a basketball court at Australind Senior High School, along with a resurfaced sports court at the adjacent Australind Primary School.

Eight transportable classrooms have been removed to provide more green space for students — and a free-standing artistic sculpture based on the Fibonacci Sequence has been added to the school’s sculpture trail.

The project is part of the WA government’s significant $1.5 billion capital works program to build and improve public education facilities across Western Australia.

WA Education Minister Dr Tony Buti said: “Investing in regional school facilities is essential to ensure every Western Australian student has access to a high-quality education, regardless of their location.”

South West schools among the strongest performers in WA in various ATAR subjects

Headshot of Carly Laden

The South West has come out as one of the highest performing regions in WA education for 2022, with several of the region’s schools topping a number of ATAR courses.

Bunbury Catholic College, Australind Senior High School, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Cape Naturaliste College, Manea Senior College and Margaret River Senior High School were listed among the top-performing schools in various subjects following last year’s ATAR exams.

Australind Senior High School was among the top of the class in chemistry out of 180 schools across the State that offered the subject as an ATAR course.

Principal Domenic Camera said many of the school’s ATAR chemistry students were part of the school’s mathematics and philosophy specialist program from years seven to 10, with a focus on bringing out the best in academics.

Journalism for the curious Australian across politics, business, culture and opinion.

“Here at Australind Senior High School we are committed to ensuring our students are focused on being the best they can be,” he said.

“A top chemistry performance demonstrates the success that students can have in a regional setting when the conditions and expectations for success are in place. We want to see students live in their local communities and access a quality education in their local public school, as ours have been able to in Australind.”

As well as the mathematics and philosophy specialist program, Mr Camera credited the result to chemistry teacher Ben Quenby and supportive school staff and families.

“Our chemistry teacher Ben Quenby is an outstanding teacher and mentor to all our ATAR students,” he said.

“He provides students with a structured teaching and learning program, incorporating study skills and revision activities throughout the year, and sets a high benchmark for students to aspire to.”

Cape Naturaliste College was among the top-performing schools in the subject of geography, with principal Mark Gillett praising the hard work of the school’s latest cohort of graduates and the school’s staff.

“As a regional school, it is nice to demonstrate to our community that students can achieve excellent results while choosing to live in the area,” he said.

“This outstanding result is also a credit to the geography teacher, who knows the course extremely well and can get the best out of every student through strong relationships and trust.”

Grace Christian School was recently revealed by The West Australian as one of the State’s top-performing schools in English.

Principal Hugo de Ridder said their teacher and head of English Debbie Stone and her entire department had done an “exceptional” job of building up students’ English skills.

“There’s been a real focus on literacy in the school, “ he said. “That’s been going on for a number of years — this is just the culmination of all of that.”

Manea Senior College was among the top of the class in literature, Bunbury Catholic College received top marks in biology and English, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School was among the top performers for accounting and finance, and Margaret River Senior High School topped the class in mathematics applications.
